This thing is criminally old! 12/22/2014 8:08:41 AM

Pros: I'm sitting here mind-blown given I've considered buying new drives for it since I've near capped its current capacity... Not due to any failure. I installed it in late 2009, turned it on without power saving, and the only reason it's ever been off was due to power outages.

Cons: It's too reliable to replace. I want a shiny new one but can't justify the expense when the stability, performance, and speed is still totally on-par after 5 years.

Overall Review: If Buffalo's hardware is still as reliable as it was back then, I wouldn't skip a beat in buying a new one. For now, I'm just upgrading the old one since, after 5 years, I'm still completely satisfied with it for day-to-day use. It holds all my non-application files. It hosts whatever USB printer I happen to own for the year. It has never, ever, EVER given me a problem. Skynet has nothing on this.

Just now having problems 11/7/2012 6:08:22 PM

Pros: With two 500GB hard drives mirrored this unit has been working since 2008 and has just now lost one drive.
It has been serving as our media server with 7,000+ songs and many movies along with backing up our computer.

Cons: None

Failed after 13 months! 2/5/2010 2:03:09 PM

Pros: Worked well until it completely failed. Even the USB backup was corrupted.

Cons: Failed after 13 months!
I called tech support and they issued an RMA. Now, I just got an email that my RMA will not be honored!
Apparently, it is two months out on warranty and even though it obviously failed and an RMA was issued, Buffalo wants to just walk away and leave me with a $250 brick. This is inexcusable!
I bought a NAS to store valuable data in a secure way (Raid 1 with back-ups). I did not expect to the thing to fail in 13 month and have Buffalo just walk away.
I am escalating this issue, but I expected much better treatment.

Does what I expected of it. 2/2/2010 10:29:31 AM

Pros: Mindless to install. Very easily configured unit to work with my AD domain at my home. I set my drives up to be mirrored and then created shares which I use for both user accounts and for client machines that are not part of my domain. I like the "trashbox" option for deleted files which acts like a recycle bin for the just incase deletions. For the money, this little NAS does a great job giving you a common place to share files amoung different computers.

Cons: Speed transfers max at about 14/mbs as opposed to the 35ish/mbs that I get from my other Gig devices. (I am running all Gig switches and CAT6.
Wish there was a way to define a trashbox cleanup schedule but I easily found a work around using Limagito.

Overall Review: I don't use any of the other features of this device and don't stream or store movie files off it as I have another machine dedicated for this purpose. This device is just used as a big hard drive on the network and that is all I expected out of it.
I will most likely be buying another one sometime in the near future and recommending these to friends.

Don't let the power go out 1/29/2010 6:49:53 PM

Pros: Good price, easy to set up.

Cons: We lost power and the unit no longer works. I used the NASNavigator2 software to check the status. It said "EM Mode" and to contact my local support.

I emailed Buffalo support a week ago but never heard from them. I am unable to get my data until I hear back from them. Since it's under warranty, I can't disassemble it to get the hard drives.

Overall Review: This works fine, until the power goes out. I'd advise to either get a UPS, or pay more for a better quality product.

Good NAS 1/15/2010 8:25:58 AM

Pros: Bough the Link Station to replace an older PC we were using as a file server. Installation and set-up were simple. In the 4 months since we got it, we haven't had any problems. Browsing and opening files is quicker than with the PC.

Cons: Saving large files (>50 Mb) seems to take longer than with the PC the Link Station replaced. The management interface could be a little more user friendly. E.g., it does not alphabetize its users/folders/groups lists, which can get annoying if you have a large number of users, folders, or groups. Also, I was not impressed with the Memeo backup software that came with it.

Overall Review: Bought this strictly as a 'file server' for a small office (100Mb) network. Haven't used the web access or print server functions.

Beware 12/16/2009 6:28:23 AM

Pros: So far has been dependable. Easy setup

Cons: I purchased this for raid 1 so I could have redundancy. I just found out if one of the drives fail the unit will not operate. What is the point if it cant operate off of one hard drive?? Where is the redundancy raid 1 normally provides?

Didn't have it long before it stopped working 12/10/2009 1:51:54 PM

Pros: Holds a lot.

Cons: It started giving me error messages and has a blinking orange light on the front. I contacted tech support at Buffalo (which takes forever btw, they don't respond to emails for 2 days and their phone hold time is absolutely ridiculous).

They said I have a bad sector and have to fill out and RMA to get it fixed or replaced.

I don't even want to because it's probably just going to fail again and I'll lose all my videos, music, pictures, documents, etc.

Overall Review: I don't know why I buy stuff from Buffalo anymore, nothing but problems. This is the last time.
