I'm looking for an inexpensive Network Attached Storage device that I can attach to my Local area network (from my switch with a Cat5 cable), Assign it a LAN IP, and have my other local area network workstation users see and use it as a separate hard drive for storage. Is this the NAS device for me ? Also - Preferably I would also like to be able to attach a flash drive to the device and keep some data there as well.

As a single user point access yes....It will do all you want except for multiple users. For that, I would suggest that you get something with a little more beef and redundancy such as a dual drive system with a mirror for fault tolerance. I am sure Buffalo has some solutions and look at D-Link as well.

Can this be setup as an FTP server using something like FileZilla FTP server?

it has a built in FTP Setup, but might not be as easy as FileZilla.

Does it work with PLEX?

Yes and no. You can't run Plex Media Server on this device, but you can store your videos on it and point a Plex Media Server to this location. That is the setup I currently have.
