Can you backup both a mac and a windows pc on this? Like install two different hdd's with different os on each?

No, you do not install and OS over the NAS, it is actually just a drive over your network, and its accesible from anything you have in the same network. Ex- a Mac, a Windows or Linux and even and SmartPhone.

Whit more advanced options you can also use your NAS remotely if yo can configure your router to forward ports and everything.

Question 2

Hi, probably a daft question, but would a single drive work in here, or must you have two?  I'm most interested in an external hard drive connected by ethernet rather than USB, as well as the print server capabilities.  RAID/expanded storage may be useful at some point, but not my primary concern right now.  Thanks

The user manual for the 220 is unclear on this.  There is a non-RAID "JBOD"mode.  This mode uses the hard drives inside the LinkStation as individual drives. The disk space you can use is the total capacity of all drives in the LinkStation. If any drive is damaged, then the data on that drive is lost.  This may be what you are looking for but I can't confirm it will allow you to use just one drive with the Linkstation 220 or not.  There is a single drive model the 210 which may also be an option.

Question 3

Can this be used without installing any software on the connected host systems? All I want is to be able to share files between 4 computers. Previous WD NAS has failed, but was simple; connect ENET to ISP router, good to go. I need replacement.

You really don't need to have any software installed on any machine as its a true NAS.   You'll have to eventually map the drive on each computer, but thats normal with any networked drive.

However for initial setup you should install the software on at least one computer as it allows you to setup the system and create shares, permissions, etc..   You can do that from a web browser, but the software does give you some additional capabilities.

does the device support drives larger than 2.2TB?

Yes, I have two 4TB hard drives set up as RAID but it can also be set up combined for a total of 8TB if you choose to do so.  From what I've read 4TB is the maximum supported... I'm not sure if it can support anything larger.  Also there is a USB located on the back if you need to attach another portable hard drive if needed.

Yes if you JOB the device ( Drives ) . I would recommended you install Buffalo's recommended hard drives. just in case you have any issues.

I have 2 3 tb Toshiba drives in mine which are mirrored. It works great no issues.

Does this product support RAID mirroring on the two drives?

You can either do spanning or mirroring. It supports Raid 0 or Raid 1.

What is the capacity of the hard drives?  Nowhere does the description say "hard drives not included" or "enclosure only".

No hard drives installed. You install your own. there are reccomended NAS Hard Drives for it. YOu can a single hard drive or in pairs. either  1( 1tb,2tb,3tb or 4tb) single or 2drives same sizes in a raid set up for a max of 8tb.

Does this have an auto on feature for after power outages?

Good question, but I do not know the answer.  I would recommend a UPS to handle power outages.  This can be backed up by a home generator, which means your ups only has to handle the load long enough for the generator to kick in.

What is the maximum capacity of drives that can be used? This would not be of much value to me if it's limited to using 3TB drives, but if it can support 4TB/6TB drives, I would purchase this immediately.

The LS220DE model supports 4TB for sure but the manual does not indicate a specific maximum limit, only some caveats for 3+ TB disks.

Has anyone installed SATA I drives? I have already have two 1TB WDC WD10EZRZ Blues that I do not trust Windows to manage.

The WD10EZRZ are SATA 3 drives.  Personally I have not installed them in this particular enclosure but I'm pretty sure that they will work as I have installed WD40EFRX which are SATA 3 and 5400rpm as well.
