Question 1

Had a power failure in my office after a year. The NAS did not restart on its own. I looked at the GUI settings, nothing addresses this in the settings either. Is this not a standard feature?

Correct, unlike many Servers, the Buffalo Station will not power back on after a power outage. However if you have not already, you may want to think about connecting this Device to a Smart UPS and set your Sync settings for graceful shutdowns to avoid Data corruption in the event of another power outage.

Question 2

I have read that this works with windows Active Directory, is this true? how hard is it to set this up?  We are running windows 2003 rd2 as domain server.

Yes this storage works with Windows AD. It is not hard to setup I created 2 arrays I use one array for iSCSI storage for an ESX Host and 1 array is setup as NAS for a Windows Share. I love this device it works very well, my only issue is that 4TB storage is misleading as it ships with only 900GB drives

Question 3

Could I replace the drives with more storage, i.e. use 4GB or 8GB each x 4 drives?  I just want to know if the main unit can manage bigger drives.  Thanks in advance.

You can, but if this is the direction you think you're going in, you may want to consider purchasing a NAS that doesn't come with drives and then you can install the drive configuration of your choice.  Not sure if Buffalo has this flavor, but for example, a Synology does.

Question 4

If I use this for my network, are the drives protected with encryption so someone couldn't walk off with my data?

Are you asking for file encryption or full disk encryption? are you concerned about your data at rest? or more with data loss prevention? The word encryption is way over used. It's like asking, "Does this device prevent hackers?"  But to guess at an answer to your vague question, the device offers neither out-of-the-box, however, you can always install your own file encryption, which is what I did. Go ahead and google "how to create a .DMG file on my hard drive"
