Will this support 2 non-identical devices? What I have is a sound bar and a TV. The sound bar will only accept an HDMI input and will not pass the picture so I need to split the HDMI source to feed both the sound bar and the TV.

Yes, it will work. I use this to feed two non-identical devices...a TV and a projector.

Does this unit allow for extending the display across two screens or does it simple duplicate?

Extending, no. Duplicating, yes. No alteration to the signal is done with this device, it simply duplicates the signal onto 2 displays. Extending displays is a function of the video card.
