What is the length of the cable?

It's aprox. eighteen (18) inches in length. It was more than long enough to reach from my top 3.5" bay to the first USB2 port on my ATX sized motherboard.

What kind of motherboard connector does this reader use? My mobo has a dedicated (blue) USB 3.0 connector.

The motherboard connector is labeled as a Type 2 or Type 3 USB connector.  It is a 10-pin connector (two rows of 5 pins) with no pin on pin #9.  This connector is normally along the board edge near the front panel header connection.

Does this product work with Windows 7 and Windows 8 64 bit and also does it work with Micro SdHC cards?

Hi Dave,

I use this product primarily for SD cards. On Windows 7 64-bit it works great and my computer detects the card as soon as I pop it in. There is no micro SD port, but I also have a micro-to-standard SD converter card, and I put that converter card into the SD slot, so it has never been an issue that cropped up for me.

If you're looking for something to read MicroSD, I would suggest buying a different product that contains MicroSD from the get-go.

I'm curious how to install the card reader and if I need to purchase anything else for installation?

If your power supply has a free power cable and you have a spare SATA cable to connect the card reader to your motherboard, just plug and play. The card reader may come with a SATA cable (I can’t remember). If so, it should be listed in the item description.

Does this fit into a 3.5" hard drive slot, or a 5.25" optical bay slot? The item title states 3.5" but reviews show people putting this into their 5.25" bay drives.

This fits into 3.5" drive slot, where a floppy drive would have been. You could mount it in a 5.25" slot with a drive adapter such as BYTECC Bracket-525.

Can this drive be used externally with a laptop by plugging into the USB port on the laptop?

No.
It needs to plug into a USB Header on a desktop motherboard.  It doesn't have a standard USB connector.   What you want  is an external USB Hub.

I need a card reader which can be bolted from below ; my cage for 3.5 bay will not let me bolt from the side . can this item be bolted from below? does anybody know a similar card reader which can be bolted either from the side or from below ( similar to a hard drive?

will this work with a akai mpc 2000xl?

It's designed to fit into a 3.5" PC drive bay and connects via a 9 pin connector to the USB pins on a motherboard (2x5 block of pins labeled USB). So... maybe. I don't know anything about MIDI sequencers, but try looking inside to see if it has those pins somewhere. I see there is a model MPC2000XL-MCD that comes with a card reader, so there must be a way to upgrade it. Good luck.
