Does this item provide power for the disk drive?

Yes, in the form of a good quality power supply with a removable 4-ft. 120V input power cord that will fit into standard 120V wall receptacles in the United States.  The other end of the cord plugs into the power supply.   The output cord is permanently attached to the power supply. It has the standard female terminations for both SATA & IDE type drives.  This 30504 is a kit that will enable you to work on both types of the IDE drive and the SATA drive.  A short SATA cable is also included for the connection between the power supply and the SATA drives.  In short, it provides ALL that you will need.  Best wishes.

Do I need a separate power supply to power a IDE hard drive?

You will need a power supply to power an IDE hard drive. The product description states under "Features" that it includes "a 5 Volt (1 Ampere) power supply that supports both SATA power and standard 4-pin Molex (LP4) power connectors." Please note that the power supply should only be expected to serve power to one drive at a time during its use, and not two drives just because there are two different type of connectors provided.

The unit that I received came with the described power supply. You can view one of the provided photos that labels what items you will be receiving in the box upon purchase.

I don't know if my computer has USB 2.0 or 3.0. Does it matter if the IDE SATA USB adapter is 2.0 or 3.0?

does it work with window 8 computer?

Yes, it works the same as an external USB drive would work.
Depending on the drive you may have to take ownership of files and in rare instances go into disk management to gain access to the partition.

Can this product be plugged into a still working diseased computer port and still remove files without having to take the computer apart?

You won't have to take the diseased computer apart, but you will have to remove the hard drive from it.  This is usually a simple task on most machines today.  Once you remove the hard drive, you will connect this drive adapter to it.  The other end of the adapter has a USB connector.  You''ll connect that USB connector to another working computer.   From that point the other working computer will treat your "bad" hard drive like a USB thumb drive and you will be able to browse it.  Note this works if your "bad" hard drive is just virally infected or has boot problems, but if there physical damage to the hard drive that's another issue.

I have an internal DVDRW drive from an HP server (drive DV-W28E-R56), and I want to make it external to my Dell laptop.  Will this cable work?

I ordered to attach a 4 TB drive and make a clone copy of my C Drive and OS. Worked fine and was easy to attach. My Dell W7 system recognized the attached SATA drive and I successfully made a copy of the attached system. Hope this helps. How do I know if this cord will fit my laptop?

The ATA drive adapter fits all ATA type drives, which is the majority of laptop hard drives.  If you're still concerned you can just verify that your laptop hard drive is an ATA or SATA type hard drive.  It doesn't matter if it's SATA I, SATA II, or SATA III it will work.  If you have the hard-drive removed already you can usually examine the manufacturers label on it.  Also, you can google your laptop model to find out the specs for your laptop which will tell you the hard drive type.

You can use this with a SATA hard drive that you've taken out of a computer.  There's only one way the adapater can connect to it.  Then the other end is a simple USB plug that you will connect to another computer or laptop.  The computer will then see the removed hard drive just like a USB thumb drive and you can read or write things to it.

Is there any necessary software to use the cables?

Gnerally, NO.  Linux and Windows both use this device by plugging it in.

If you are going to clone a drive and do not have software to help you do it... Clonezilla is very handy to copy a drive on to a newer larger drive.  Also to make compressed backup copies (A kin to Norton Ghost).  Oh, it is free.

Would this work with a Lenova harddrive to an hp laptop?

Generally, yes.  The drive would be "bare", taken out of the Lenovo)and connected to the adpater.  You match the drive to correct connector - IDE, Laptop IDE or SATA.  Add power connection if IDE or SATA.  Plug into HP and you now have an external drive.

I use mine for moving a VM hard drive (created of a test) and then installing it into a compiter.  Mostly, the reverse of what most people use for adpater.  Typically, you are reading an old drive and moving the data to your new machine.

will this work with Gateway All in One model ZX49700G to connect to new Dell laptop?

Depends on what you're trying to do. My guess is probably not,  unless you can extract the hard drive from the all-in-one. If that is possible then this is definitely the device you're looking for. FYI, it will require a cable to go from the Hard drive to the device (SATA, IDE, or other).

If you cannot remove the hard drive, I would suggest connecting both computers via an Ethernet cable or connect both computers to the same network to transfer data. Hope this helps!
