Can I plug an old PS2 mouse into this converter and then plug the converter into a USB port on my PC?

No, it only works the other way around. Plug a USB mouse into the converter and plug it into a PS2 port on your computer. This is the female side of the USB connection, meaning it's essentially the port side and hence won't plug into another port. (In short, this is a female USB to male PS2 adapter)

I have an older Kensington Turbo Mouse trackball.  I require a FOUR PIN PS2 FEMALE TO A USB PLUG and cannot seem to find it anywhere.  Any suggestions on a workaround?

Actually, Newegg has quite a few of those items, one of which is item #9SIA1HE0YM7331. If you search for PS2 to USB you'll see some others too. Please keep in mind that some keyboards and mice don't work well with an adapter, while others are just fine with it. It's not the adapter's fault - just the device. I hope your trackball mouse isn't one of them. Good Luck!

Trying to connect a HP deskwriter 540 to a Sony VAIO. Will it work?

No it will not work. Because this is only to connect a usb mouse or in some cases a usb keyboard to a PS/2 port. This port will not support printers.
