Does this scan in color?

Yes, it scans color. I've used it to scan in old photographs, and it does a great job. It's a touch slow, but I doubt it's slower than any other scanners in this price range.

Have hp which suddenly is not compatible without a charge for driver. Is this compatiaable with Mac ?

I wish I could answer your question.  I tried checking the manual, but it didn't tell me much.  I would check the Cannon website for drivers.  
This I can tell you.  The software that comes with the scanner stinks!  If you wish to scan a document into a PDF, you have to complete 2 or three steps.   I used to have a cannon all in one printer which had much better software.  I should have kept the printer for the scanner alone.
The scanner does scan, but I wouldn't write home to mom about it.  If I were you, I'd look for another scanner.

Seriously??? Don't you think it would be easier to turn your photo album upside down onto the scanner? Hey... I've got a better idea. Why don't you take your pictures out of the photo album...

I don't believe so. You'll need and image program for that such as Paint Shop Pro.

Yes.  You can plug it in and use the Windows scanning tools without installing any drivers.  I haven't tested the included software, though.

Yes it comes with software that will OCR, Scan to PDF, etc. The software is called "Canon MP Navigator EX". I use other software usually, but I just tried the "Canon MP Navigator EX" and told it OCR, it scanned my text document and threw the captured text right into a text file. It did a decent job.

Yes.  In fact, we have used them on several Mac and PC computers in our schools and they have worked great.  The software is pretty straight forward and easy to use.  Many of these have been used in Kindergarten through 3rd grade classrooms so that students can scan their work in.  If they can use it then most people should have no problem in using it.

I don't know if this will work on the Mac book pro
But I can vouch for it being an excellent scanner and very easy to set up. I love not needing a power cord for it also.

It is very easy.  The software has a small toolbar with various scan in options (such as scan, copier, scan-fax, scan-email).  Most of the time you will just want to use scan.  You will need to link it to some sort of picture edit software.  You can purchase one or get one for free off of the internet.
