I have 2 of these scanners, but have never tried them with Windows 8. Works great with Windows 7, so should work with 8. Check on Canon's web site to make sure, and they might have a driver download  for Windows 8.

Can this scanner be used for slides and photos?

I don't believe you can scan slides effectively with this scanner, but I have never tried. As far as photos, I have scanned them with decent results. This is an inexpensive scanner that delivers great scans of photos and documents of all kinds, but if you are looking for high quality photo/slides scanning you might want to move up to a dedicated photo/slides scanner.

Yes, I am currently using on Windows 10. I upgraded from Windows 7 to 10 with no issues. All functions work with this excellent scanner.

Mine was DoA. Probably works fine on windows. It is an older model so I'm sure drivers are already onboard.

I need an 14"x8.5" flatbed scanner to do books in PDFs. Canon says this one works but I only see an 12x8.5" scan screen.

no, this does not scan Legal sizes, although there are settings it does not scan 14x8.5.

Could you be more specific about the interface. I remember when USB 1.0 was " high speed USB"  Is this USB 3.0 or 3.1?

"High Speed" is actually the name of the transfer speed for usb 2.0. Usb 1.1 is "full speed" and usb 3.0/3.1 is "SuperSpeed"
