Do these come with toner cartridges, or is that an extra charge?

Mine came with "starter" cartridges.  Meaning, they aren't loaded to full capacity toner cartridges.  Even so, I still haven't used them up.  (I got this for home use, and I really don't print much from home.)

does this printer come with all 4 colors of toner? or just the one? it says it comes with (im assuming one) 'starter 131' toner cartridge?

It has a starter toner for all 4 colors. In my experience, if your using it in a home environment with minimal color printing, the starter toners may last 6 mos. up to 1 year.

does it work with apple?

It works perfectly with apple. I am running Apple Yosemite  on my late 2011 Macbook Pro and I have no issues. Simply download the latest driver from Canon website. Word of caution: 1. On scanning, it does require you to activate on both machines. First via the menu function on Canon Printer (if you are connected to the same network as the printer) select the identify your computer hit start, and on the macbook you may have to finish by reviewing and approving (simply follow the instructions shown on the screen of your macbook). And finally, if you are on Verizon FIOS network with their Quantum router, broadcasting on 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz, you may need to switch to the 2.4Ghz if you are printing wirelessly from your computer. In other words, my macbook needed to be on the 2.4Ghz bandwidth in order to successfully print.  My Canon printer is connected to my network via ethernet. For some strange reason, I was never able to print wirelessly while connected to my home network on the 5Ghz. If anyone is able to resolve this issue, kindly post. Thanks!

Does this print on both sides of the paper?

No. It only prints on one side automatically. You could put the paper back in the correct way and print on the other side, but it is not convenient. You need a duplex printer if you want to print on both sides.

Does this printer have scanning function?  Can it print vsrious paper sizes, like A4 and Legal?

This unit is a 4 in one (Print, scan, Copy, Fax)  and yes it can print legal from the main paper tray.  Paper tray adjusts to legal size.  It can hold 150 sheets of paper.  You can also scan legal size sheets from the auto document feeder though it can only scan letter/A4 directly from the glass. I own this unit.

Does it come with all 4 cartridges installed?

It comes with all necessary cartridges, although they're not completely filled; you'll generally get around 70% normal capacity with them. Depending on what you mean by "installed," though, they aren't "installed;" you'll need to unwrap them and load them into the printer. That said, shipping them outside the printer is really the only safe way to do it, and inserting toner cartridges isn't hard.

Does this printer come with color carts?  or do I need to add 4 carts to get it out of the box?

The printer comes with starter cartridges.  They are rated at 600 pages @ 5% coverage.  Replacement units are rated at high yield Black 2400 pages and the color units are rated at 1500 pages

Does this enlarge and reduce ?

I think it has that capability, although I didn't use it as a copier or flat bed scanner.  I do mostly multipage scanning.  I was disappointed that the controls (including the initiation of scanning jobs) have to be done by button controls directly at the device.  This was a hassle for me.

I have recently stopped using this unit due to a problem with the color cartridges printing double images.  The magenta and cyan cartridges will not align properly.  I've tried different cartridges, but the Canon will not align them. The printer had been working well and suddenly something changed. The printer is about a 1 year old and just out of warranty.

It is not a good quality color laser printer for high volume needs even when it works.  Paper tray is small and flimsy.  It is also really noisy and slow.  I have to say I'm surprised that Canon did such a lousy job with the printer portion of the device.  Had I known this before, I would not have bought this unit.

I have just switched to a different color laser printer, a Brother HL-3170CDW which is fast, better quality, and the supplies are less expensive.   I've had really good experience with Brother and the hardware is very competitively priced.  I also bought a high speed Brother Image Center scanner ADS-2000 which scans multiple pages, double sided (not a flatbed).

I'm retiring the Cannon at work and may only use it for an occasional scanning job at home.

Question 10

Will this printer function with only the black cartridge?

You can run it with only the black cartridge but you have to change your settings in the printer setup to just B & W.  My colors ran out and it gave me an error but just pushed the button and it spit out my copy.
