Copies great! But scans are crooked & has very high white threshold. 12/29/2017 12:12:30 AM

Pros: -- starts quickly, makes good quality copies at decent speed
-- excellent duplex ability, decent printer software
-- great value for price I paid
-- very low price per copy cost (I got 30K+ copies on my first D530 before it failed. Using 3rd party refilled cartridges, that comes to total cost of <1¢ per copy for toner+machine cost but not including paper cost.)
-- easy to learn/use scanning software, can produce a variety of file formats including multiple page pdf

This is my 3rd imageCLASS D500 series copier, but my first D550. 3rd party toner cartridges are one of the cheapest, and I can easily get 1000+ copies per refilled cartridge when I consistently rotate the cartridge every 100-200 copies.

My 2nd D530 is at 10K+ copies. I got this D550 as a replacement for my 1st D530 that failed after 30K+ copies.

Cons: -- scans tend to have a high white threshold, so anything that is not super white shows up in the scans, and there is significant "see-through" of the backside if the paper is thin (which is typical of many catalogs and magazines); I have this problem with all my D500 series copiers and there is no way to correct for this with the supplied scanning software; this problem only applies to scanning, and simple copying does NOT exhibit this problem
-- for the machine I received, the alignment is off, so scans come out slightly tilted (I did not have this problem with my previous two D530s)
-- also, for the machine I received, the automatic feeder does not feed perfectly straight, so the scans are even more tilted! (I use a Canon PC1080 now 60K+ copies that has an automatic feeder and never had problems with paper being fed in slightly tilted.)
-- make sure you update the scanning software if you are using Windows 10 (mine had problems when I first updated to Windows 10; also, you have click through a Windows 10 warning screen before the scanning software will start.)
-- because of the automatic feeder, you have to horizontally center the item rather than just place it at the corner like the D530; this is rather inconvenient when scanning items such as checks...

Overall Review: My experience with the D530 copiers has been mostly positive, which is why I paid extra to try the automatic feeder on the D550. Because the machine I received seems to have an alignment problem, I was disappointed. That is why I gave it only 3 stars. If there had not been the alignment problem, I would have given 4 stars. If I get another D500 series copier, I will go back to the D530s instead of getting another D550.

The printer software for the D550 is not the same as the D530. The orientation and binding settings are now on different tabs instead of the same tab, which makes changing the settings tedious. I prefer to have these 2 settings on the same tab.

The scans have a solid white boundary along the edges of the scanning platen. This causes problems for some auto-select/cropping software. I wish there was an option to just fill out the border with whatever color was at the boundary limit.

The printer is fine enough, but don’t bother trying to use it with Linux 10/1/2017 2:35:05 PM

Pros: If you’re a Windows user, this is a fine enough laser printer/scanner. Good speed, does duplex and multi-page copies/scans.

Cons: Canon’s Linux drivers are totally unworkable, and there’s no way to work it otherwise I’m able to print occasionally (sometimes I get toner-burning black pages, which is neat) and scanning is a non-starter, though I can still use it as a copier.

Overall Review: Canon needs to actually hand out working Linux drivers, or else (gasp) support open-sourced versions of them so other people can get them working.

And now it’s just not working at all on Linux, even on systems where it used to work. Sod Canon in the ear.

Pros: Perfect item for office. Scan and copies multiple sheets with great quality.

Cons: None other than larger blank paper tray would be nice.
