Do you get any ink with this item?

Yes, came with ink (toner cartridge), but I suspect as typical with most new printer purchases it was a scaled down version of a full replacement cartridge - i.e. enough toner for a while.
BTW, great printer.  Fast and really great duplex.  Only thing I don't like so much, but maybe because I haven't figured it out yet, is that you need to have a small application to scan docs and it launches when you do.  I have another combo non-Canon printer/copier/fax/scanner that once it's set up you scan something and it goes directly to a designated folder on our file server as a pdf or jpeg/tiff (your choice) and titled using a timedate stamp.  A lot more efficient.

Is a toner cartridge included?

Yes, they include what they refer to as a "starter cartridge", however, having owned and used this printer for nine months, printing perhaps an average of three pages a day, I still have about a quarter of the cartridge left. Three pages doesn't sound like a lot, but add it up over nine months and I'm very pleased with the performance of the printer and the included cartridge.

Question 3

i have an old brother, that when i print out 30-40 pages, the paper curls.  Does this printer curl the paper?

I've only printed that many pages once or twice. More often I print out 5 - 10 pages. I've never had a curling problem. I'm extremely happy with the printer and the company. I once had another Canon Laserjet color printer that just stopped printing. I called Canon tech support. They are in this country (quite easy to deal with) and they actually sent me color cartridges at no cost to see if that fixed the problem. Since it did not, they gave me a 30% discount on a replacement printer. That kind of customer service you can't beat or find anywhere.

Question 4

Does this mfp have true duplex scanning? or is it the kind of duplex where the user runs the source document through twice?

Hi Oliver J,

I have this printer and use the duplex scanning option frequently.   The MF229DW duplex scanning scans the front side of the document first and then pulls it back in to scan the back side automatically.    There is no additional user intervention beyond loading the document(s) into the automatic document feeder(ADF).  Also, the duplex scanning option includes the ability to scan documents based on the "orientation" of the paper so that when it saves to a file say PDF, the orientation is always right side up(or any orientation you like).    e.g. Credit reports(paper) from the three credit bureaus all have different orientations.   When I scan them they are always right side up so I can read them easily.    I hope this helps.

LEDGER PAPER?

I haven't tried, but I am pretty sure it will handle 8.5x14 paper, don't think it will handle 11x17.

Question 6

Does this do scan to email? Does it require a computer to send?

It does do "Scan to Email", and as far as I know, you do have to have a computer to do so. The "Scan to Email" function is through the "Canon MF Toolbox" software that comes with the printer, or you can download it from their website, so of course you need a computer to use the software. Hope that answers your questions!

P.S.
As a side note, I absolutely have loved this printer. It has worked flawlessly with my Windows 7 PC, though be cautioned that since I've owned a MAC laptop, I have found that Canon printers are temperamental about wireless connectivity with MACs.

I have color letterhead, which with Brother printers tended to bleed midway through the page.  Does this Cannon run hot that I should be worried about this happening as well?

In that you are mentioning the problem with your color letterhead bleeding (or smearing), when you run it through a laser printer, I have to assume that your letterhead was printed on a digital color toner based machine originally, which fuses the colors to the paper using heat and a electronic charge applied to the toner.

Unfortunately, you cannot be assured with any laser printer that you will not have an issue like this ... because laser printers adhere the toner using heat as well, and you are re-heating something that was originally adhered using heat.   When the re-heating occurs, you are introducing the possibility that the re-heating will transfer some of the original printed items.

Your options would include:
1.  Ensuring that your original color letterhead shells are printed using the offset printing method, which uses traditional "inks" to apply color, and which do not involve heating the paper and toners to create color.   
or
2.  Using an inkjet (not laser) type printer to print your letters on your color letterhead shells.  Inkjet printing does not use heat, and in this manner you have eliminated the issue of re-heating the letterhead stock.

tell me about the faxing capabilities of this machine?

You select the fax option on the machine, dial the number you want to send it to, put the paper in the feeder, and click start. Machine does the rest, unless its not connected or unplugged.

Question 9

When it runs out of paper and I reload there is no way to start it printing again. Not addressed in  manual. Help?

Look at the small touch screen display.  Touch the "Info" circle in the upper right corner.  Should then take you to where you can touch "Resume" after you've loaded more paper.
