does this have a twain driver?

Yes, it does. We typically use the scanner with the Canon software, but I have scanned into other applications via the TWAIN driver. It is a great scanner and takes up very little space.

Is this scanner allowed to scan the both sides of the paper at same?

Yes, this is a duplex scanner, there are two sets of image sensors, one for each side of the page.

My new computer uses Windows 8. Do I understand correctly that this scanner is not compatible with Windows 8?

We are using Windows 8.1 with this scanner and it works fine. Canon has updated drivers that will work with Windows 8 on their website.

does this product convert to PDF files and does it have auto-crop?

1) Does this product convert to PDF? Depends on what you think "convert" means. This scanner comes with software that allows you to choose the format you want the output scan to have. You can choose from PDF, TIFF, BMP, PPTX, or JPEG. It will scan a piece of paper into a digital copy in those formats. What it will not do is convert digital files to other formats. You need specialized conversion software for that.

2) Does it have auto-crop? I honestly do not know what you mean by auto-crop. The scanner software allows you to adjust between auto-size detection and various pre-populated scan sizes like letter,  or legal. That isn't really "auto cropping." When someone talks about cropping, I think of manipulating the image to show parts of a whole. An example of cropping would be cutting out just a person's face from a picture of a crowd. If you require image cropping, that is a post-production software function, not a scanner one. If you mean whether or not this scanner "auto-sizes," the answer is yes. It has auto color and auto size detection.
