Not worth the trouble 4/17/2014 8:37:50 PM

Pros: Good form factor
Great performance
Nice IPS screen

Cons: Screen develops a burn in after just a week of usage. This problem can be found if you look up the laptop. Burn-in only gets worse as time goes on.

Overall Review: Nice laptop but the screen makes it not worth it.

Great little laptop 3/31/2014 3:59:01 PM

Pros: Overall construction of the laptop is solid, including the flip screen hinge. Having never used one of these laptops I was a bit weary about it. Switching "modes" works well, with an occasional hiccup with the accelerometer not flipping the display accordingly. I was originally leaning towards the Asus T300 but I'm really glad I went with this one. I switch modes a lot when messing around with things and since the laptop isn't that heavy, I like that I don't have to put the keyboard anywhere or hunt around for it when I want it back. The screen looks great, and the touchscreen functionality is excellent. No weird glitches or anything. The keyboard is also quite comfortable (much more so than the Dell Latitude's we have at work).

Battery life is incredible. I'll be running builds in a Ubuntu VM while doing 3D modeling (with a bit of lag...) in SolidWorks on the WIndows side, and still get a solid 6 hours of run time. If you're just doing email and internet, figure on anywhere from 8-12 hours. Last weekend I didn't even charge it.

If Linux support is important to you (like it was for me), good news - it works out of the box. If running under VirtualBox, you just need to install Guest Additions for proper display resolution. Oh, one thing to note - the touchscreen support in Ubuntu "works", but Ubuntu treats a touch device like Win7 does, NOT Win8, which has (in my opinion) much more intuitive and seamless support.

I find the processor to be perfectly fine for code development and other random engineering/hobby work. I'm really glad that I waited to get a Haswell Processor though for the extra battery life and also that the battery life doesn't tank as soon as you try to actually use the processor for anything.

Cons: Out of the box it only has 60 gigs of SSD space free. You can quickly free up almost another 20 if you get a flash drive and make a recovery disk. The recovery disk utility will even merge the recovery partition to your C drive for you if you want.

Note that there isn't really much in the way of "bloatware" on the machine, so you can't exactly free up a ton of space by deleting pre-loaded applications. Probably less than a gig total. Wanting to run a dual boot or VM system, storage space was at more of a premium than I thought it would be.

As for memory, Win8 can be a hog sometimes. I thought 4GB would be plenty, but sometimes I feel like it's barely enough even when only browsing the web. I haven't had any real issues yet, but it's not hard to get near your memory limit.

That said, the price difference between this model and the next model up that has more SSD space and more memory costs MUCH more. Also, while you have the option of replacing the SSD yourself, you can't upgrade the memory as it's soldered on to the MB.

Overall Review: Addressing the Win8 thing up front, I found that if I installed Classic Shell and set it to emulate a Win7 UI, Win8 gets "fixed". Metro and its related apps are actually nice in tablet mode, but terrible in desktop mode. Classic Shell makes my desktop look feel and act like a Win7 machine, but with Win8 I have the option of a more touch-centric experience for tablet mode where I mainly sketch, browse Reddit, read emails, etc.

Win8 overall is really quick. Boot time is ridiculously fast and with Classic Shell it feels like a peppier Win7. My only complaint is that I had to install Classic Shell to get this nice overall experience. This should have been the default behavior of Win8/Win8.1, but it isn't. You need to rely on third party developers to fix it. However, at least the fix was easy and painless, and actually made for an overall better OS and interface than Win7 (which I really like).

Overall I think I would have been disappointed using Win7 on this laptop given how it treats the inputs from a touch device. It's small differences, but they're there. I use the touch screen all the time since it's often quicker to just tap the screen than finger the pointer to the correct place, so it became a pretty big factor. Touch, BTW, is really helpful while cramped up on a plane.
