works with plain old Surface Pro 2? what does RT mean?

RT stands for "runtime" It runs Windows RT in oppose to regular Windows 8. Windows RT is designed to run on low-powered ARM processors. I don't have Surface Pro 2, so I never tried, but I am sure it will work on it. In fact, look at the description. It mentions Surface Pro 2 right there. Hope it helps!

Does this cover flip to the backside, to get out of the way, if you don't want to use the keyboard?

Yes it does, but it can be easier to just pop it off quickly too. I don't find it getting in the way much at all.
