Great case! Poor Power Supply -1 egg Updated 6/8/2020 after 8 years of ownership. 6/8/2020 10:08:57 AM

Pros: -Chenbro has excellent customer service and replacement parts are available.
-well built except drive caddies are delicate.
-steel is thick accurately bent and not tinny
-4 hot swap bays, 2 internal bays
-attractive

Cons: -poor power supply, an OEM version, not able to look up specs but estimate to be 70% efficient, power factor as measured by my Kill A Watt is only 0.58. This is not the power supply you would want on a server designed to be on 24x7. In under two years you could pay off the cost of a more efficient supply. I WOULD PAY MORE FOR A 80 PLUS REGISTERED POWER SUPPLY (or offer case without a supply).
-gets hot, see above comment.
-The drive caddies are prone to the guide rails breaking. Tighten the drive screws very gently, they do not need to be tight. Fortunately Chenbro has excellent customer service and replacement parts are available.
-There is no managed (engineered) air flow through the case, because of air leaks the drive cooling fan recirculates air inside the case.
-System is louder than it needs to be (due to the air flow not being engineered).

Overall Review: I like this case allot, but needed to spend time re-engineering the air flow. My goal was to make this case dead silent. This required for sound insulation having as much of a closed box as possible this required one air intake and one exhaust and for the cooling air to follow an unconvulated path through the server: in through the front drive bays, down through the main 120mm fan through the 90 degree duct, across the MB and then up through the power supply and out the top rear vent. This way the main case fan and the power supply are both working to pull the same air along the path through the case with no dead air zones. The PS fan is active based on temperature so it helps out as much as it needs to pull the air along the cooling path and keep itself at the right temperature. I am running a 65W possessor, 4 Barracuda 7200.12 1TB drives and one SSD. The theoretical maximum power dissipation is 150W but from memory is actually about <70W. it is quiet and has no cooling problems. I think I achieved my goals. If anyone wants to follow:
1) For efficiency, replaced the original power supply with "SeaSonic SS-300ES Bronze 300W ATX12V V2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply". This was carefully chosen because it was the smallest I could find (study the PS efficiency curves) and the air intake is directly above the MB (on the PS end rather than side). I do not recommend a PS with a large 120mm side fan since this creates an dead air zone above the MB. YOU WANT THE AIR INTAKE ABOVE THE MB. I would have used a 200W supply if I could have found one in the correct form factor).
2) For noise reduction/air flow management, blocked off the case side vents and lower rear holes with aluminum tape, so air will be forced to exit through the top power supply air exit vent.
3) For noise reduction/air flow management, added a 3/4" foam sheet between the top of the drive cage and the case to block cage air holes, and absorb sound. Also sealed all remaining drive cage internal gaps (primarily the inside corners) with aluminum tape. Intent of all this is so no hot air inside the case will get recirculated and only cool outside the case air is pulled in by the 120m fan.
4) For sound reduction, replaced the original 120mm fan with
4) You could add sound deadner sheets to the side panels but I didn't find any need to do this.

All this quieted down the system so it is barely audible.

Almost the perfect MediaServer. 4/28/2017 8:54:18 AM

Pros: Smallish, the PSU can be swapped, does not run hot, HOT-SWAP!!

Cons: Can be a pain in the %@#$#! to put components in if you have bigger hands, but it comes with the territory of small boxes anyway ( just wish it had a way to slide the MB.
The System FAN could have been better placed.

Overall Review: It does the job i want it to do which is to house my MediaServer, is quiet enough (although i keep it in a closet). like i said not easy to put the stuff inside but once all the components are inside there is no need to work with it again (unless you like to change components ever other day)

I've had this for a while now, and i have no complains about sound, however I do have to point out that might want to be mindful as to where you place it as the on led light is extremely bright.

Ideal SOHO Server 3/7/2017 2:11:54 PM

Pros: I have had one of these running with a dual-core Pentium board for 2+ years. Drive cooling is great. It just sits there and hums.

Cons: I had to cut off some of the fan shroud to clear my MB. I wish they would squeeze in a 5th drive (there is room). It could be cheaper.

nice 4 hot swap bays 4/18/2016 2:12:08 PM

Pros: better than qnap

Cons: just a tight little box, gotta beat the hell out of the sides

Overall Review: why spend 1500.00 + tax for a proprietary build with security issues when freenas is all that is needed

Excellent home server/media center box 9/28/2014 7:36:09 PM

Pros: Excellent size, "standard" Power supply, fairly quite

Cons: nothing for cable management...you are on your own...

Overall Review: I swapped out the power supply with an earth watts 380. Fit fine. Ideally, a modular PS would be best but it works. Dropped in a gigabyte board with the low power i7. Very tight and took a bit of time getting everything in its place but well worth it.

Very nice ITX case for Server / NAS 3/11/2014 6:43:42 AM

Pros: One of the few mini-itx cases in this size that can hold 6 hard drives and the only one with hot-swappable drive bays. I needed a small mini-itx case that could hold at least 4 3.5" drives and 1 SSD for a compact Hyper-v server. I compared every mini-itx case on Newegg and this one came out on top in price / features. After receiving it I was happy to see that the materials and build quality are very good. Most of the other mini-itx cases on Newegg that can hold this many drives are physically larger. This case if very compact and surprising very easy to work on. It uses a standard atx power supply and 120 mm fan. Air flow design is simple and effective. Both stock fans run whisper quiet.
I'm using this with a ASRock E3C226D2I Mini ITX Server Motherboard, 16 GB RAM and a i5 4570S, 120GB SSD. Idle power is 29 watts. With 10 TB of disk space (2 x 4TB, 1 x 2TB drives) idle power is 42 watts.

Cons: It would be nice if the front USB ports were USB 3.0 insted of 2.0

PSU DOA 1/18/2014 9:20:46 PM

Pros: Case has nice features, extra 2x2.5" trays are are cool, layout/airflow is smart.

Cons: The PSU on mine was DOA. I wasn't that excited about the PSU anyway since the stock one wasn't 80+, I've ordered a replacement 300W 80+ bronze (the lowest wattage one I could get that was similar and 80+, I wish they made 150-200W ones).

Great case for Atom processor. 11/15/2013 7:26:21 AM

Pros: Case is great like others have mentioned.
Love the drive bays and case for this price.

Cons: Cooling is an issue unless you are using a low powered processor like an Intel Atom.
Make sure to check the PSU switch for the right settings.

Overall Review: I first had a Supermicro motherboard with an Intel i3 thinking it would run cool and quiet, but this case doesn't offer the best air flow for that. I changed out the PSU for a better one thinking a faster PSU fan would help, but didn't much. Tried 2 different heatsink/fan combos, but they are too loud.

Went ahead and ordered a Supermicro board with D5series Atom and now it's cool and is quiet. I've tried other tweaks for cooling before going with the Atom, but the fans were just too loud to keep the heat low when under pressure. Noise usually not an issue, but I can hear this thing over my 3 other computers I'm sitting next to and they are highly cooled gaming machines (but 120mm fans though).
Main problem I found was the heat is not leaving the case fast enough so it's circulating more heat than I expected.

I would purchase again as long as I stick with Atoms since they work fine for a Debian based NAS.

I'm thinking of trying the i3 and board again with a hybrid water cooler to see if that runs nice. Hoping to fit the heat pipe and 120mm cooling fan with the PSU. Maybe enough room? Will have to find out.
