is this also a router?

No, which personally is good.  There is only one RJ-45 Port on the back.  I purchased to work with my Sonicwall however unknown to us our ISP required a certain model and so we returned this one and got the Motorola Surfboard SB6121 which we now have 4 in our different branch locations and work well.  Unfortunately, no specific up or down vote on the Cisco, not their fault they were not compatible with ISP.

FYI: A modem with 1 RJ-45 is typically only a modem, and a modem with a WAN and 4 LAN RJ-45s is almost certain a modem/router.  Hope this helps.

does this work with comcast high speed?

Does this work with Comcast? Unfortunately no. I had read some forums about some individuals getting a particular service representative to help them out in registering this particular modem, but that was since a couple years ago. I thought surely they have added support for it by now, but the end result was no. And after several days of being on the phone it looked like there was not really going to be any help on Comcast's end. I ended up having to return this modem and buy the "approved version" which is the DPC3008. That modem is comcast specific. And not to get all tin foil hat on you, but I just wish there were more options available to the public.

No, check your ISP for combination modem/wifi router that are approved for you to use.  Personally, I think it is best to get them WAP and modem individually.

does the power cord have a power brick in the middle or does it connect directly to the outlet?

Brick, but not in the middle.
Very close to plug which goes (of course) into outlet.
No problem at all.
Brick just rests on floor.
Should you care to know, this is the identical unit the techs at my cable company buy.
Works great.

Yes. I have Cox cable service using this modem, and it works great. Just contact tech support with the mac address.

Has anyone had a problem with extreme heat coming from this modem?   Mine gets so hot that you almost can't keep your hand on it for more than a few seconds.

Yes, I have mine under a desk and it does get very hot.  Thinking of moving it to a more open area for better heat dispersal.  I've noticed that I lose internet service periodically and after a minute or two comes back on.  I assume this is a heat build up issue and a reset of the modem since internal communication to the router is not effected.

Will this support up to three tvs, each having access to separate channels?

The DPC3010 provides a faster connection to the Internet by utilizing eight bonded downstream (into your home) channels along with four bonded upstream (out of your home) channels. One-way to look at “bonding” it is to think of tiny wires carrying data or 1 big heavy gauge wire carrying data.  Obviously the large cable would have far more throughput/headroom that the 8 small wires.  The same theory holds true for the upstream wires as well.  Just with four small wires instead of 8.

As a result of “bonding” bonded channels deliver downstream data rates in excess of 320 Mbps (Mega bits per second) and upstream data rates up to 120 Mbps, up to eight times faster the old DOCSIS 2.0 Also, many ISP’s cannot provide enough data throughput to keep up with what this modem is capable of.  My ISP is Cox Communication with the top tear of 150 Mbps.  I run two HD TV’s, 2 Ipads, and two iMac’s all streaming video and a Sony PS3 for Gaming at the same time without any lag or stuttering.  The HD is pulled through Netflix and the video is shard and clear.

Also, your question did not mention a router.  What router are you going to be using?  Although it is expensive:  one of the best routers out there is an Apple Airport Extreme with the latest wireless protocol  “AC” (over a gigabit in speed).  It also has a USB port that you can use a powered USB hub with to stack hard drives and such.    Also, the wired portion can be completely controlled by the router which will constantly check for signal degradation and adjust accordingly. If wireless is not your “cup of tea”, Netgear ProSafe 8-Port Gigabit Smart Switch PD/AC power is a great choice to go with.

Is this modem compatible with Mediacom?

Yes, I'm a Mediacom subscriber, and this is the modem I'm currently using. It's been working quite well for me. It took a bit of wrangling to get it up and running, as the first support tech wasn't quite up to speed, but once they handed off to another tech, it went pretty quick.

When I purchased the modem, it wasn't on their published support list, but posts by Mediacom techs in their forums seemed to indicate that it might soon be. Until and unless it is, they won't do firmware updates. That's the only down side I can think of, though, since I've not experienced any issues yet, it doesn't appar to be a problem at all.

is the power brick midway in the power cord or is it at the end of the connector to the outlet?

If I remember right it's at the end, not particuarly big either.  Just as a note, I did have to return this item as my cable provide only has a very select group of modems that they will "allow" on their network and this wasn't on them.  Check to make sure that you don't fall into this category too before you buy it.

Question 10

Does this unit handle phone, wireless internet and hardwire computer hook up?   If not, which does and which is best with comcast?

No, this is strictly a cable modem; QAM (coax) in, a single ethernet port out. No switch, no native VoIP capability. You'll want to double-check with Comcasts compatibility (I have Cox) for your area--it can vary with geographic region, at least it does in the case of Cox--and I see at least one review claiming it's not Comcast compatible.
