Does this product use a power adaptor? If not, then why doesn't it need one?

No, it does not require a power supply unit.
Think of it as a "conductor" of signals. The signal is sent by the source connected to the input port and it travels through the internal conduit of the switch to the monitor. The energy required to push the data signal through the switch is provided by the source sending the signal.

Will this splitter allow me to use both monitors separate, or will the display be the same on both?

Hi Deanna,
This switch is to connect two (2) sources of signal (PC, etc.) to one (1) monitor. 
If you want to connect two (2) monitors to single/multiple sources, you need a switch that has at least two (2) "Output" cables.
