Question 1

In one of the answered questions it was mentioned that they had to remove the motherboard to install this cooler?? Is that true?

The correct answer is maybe. Although it is possible to do with the mother board installed if when you remove the right side cover of the case you can get to the CPU backing plate or whatever it is called on an Intel CPU. A helper could keep it from falling if it is not stuck or glued in place while you attach mounting hardware to component side of board. The supplied mounting hardware includes backside of the mother board parts which are usually  required. In the case of the AMD back plate I used the new part. It is better built than what was on the mother board. I could have used the stock back plate. As for the Intel type CPU from what I recall from reading install info at the manufacturer's web site, sometimes back side of the board access is not required. A word about thermal paste. A company (Very cold northern place) metal has on their web site a good description of how to use their product on direct contact heat pipe coolers like this. This involves prepping the CPU and the contact surface of the cooler by spreading a very thin see-through coat on both. This fills in voids on the cooler around the heat pipes and allows for no trapped air when the BB sized dot of paste is spread during clamping of the cooler to mount. This also cuts break-in time by a large amount so that maximum efficiency is achieved sooner.

I have a Lenovo K450e with a i5 4460 CPU. I was considering upgrading to a i7 4790. I have read many reviews with overheating issues and I was considering the D92. My question is will it fit? I have put a flexible ruler in the box and I think it will. Any answers or advice would be appreciated.

This is a very big piece of equipment.  I have the thermaltake overseer case and it fits with about an inch of room in every direction. The piping keeps it higher than the other components,  but if space is limited, this may nit work.

The component itself is a dream. It keeps the case very cool as it rips air straight through and out of the case. I love it. If you are noise sensitive  it does have a little hum, but that's about all.

Question 3

How good is this for cooling really? I don't plan on OC my cpu and I mainly do gaming on my PC so is this good enough or should I get a better one?

This is one of the best and most popular for the money. as long as you don't have a space heater AMD this thing will do well. I have a 75W Haswell that has 22nm architecture (really small comparatively) and running Intel Burn test it stays below 70C with minimal fan speed. running games (even Need for Speed 2015) I never see my computer get even warm.
The only thing I would recommend is if space isn't a concern get the 212 EVO that way the fans are a much more standard size so you can swap it out very easily, this cooler has 92mm fans which are a little harder to come by.

What's the best way to apply thermal grease to this cooler?

The best way that I've found is to apply the grease to the CPU itself in a line perpendicular to the direction of the heat pipes.  The length of the line should be about 2/3 of the width of the CPU and as centered as you can get it.

this or 212 EVO? I need one that is quiet
also will this fit in define r4 case?
will i have any ram clearance issues with MSI Z97-Gaming 7 LGA 1150?

This is a quiet cooler if you leave the automatic fan regulation on.

It will fit in the Define R4 case.

This cooler won't have RAM clearance issues for the vast majority of heat spreaders, it comes up pretty much flush with the left-most ram slot on a MSI Z97 board.  With the ram I'm using (G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series) the fan is still about 0.5" above the top of the heat spreaders.

As far as the D92 vs 212 EVO, the safe bet is the D92 since it is less likely to have clearance issues than the 212 EVO in terms of both the computer case and RAM.

do i have to remove the cpu itself or just the stock intel heat sink on top of it and put this one on there to replace?

You have to remove stock heat sink and possibly lift motherboard up, depending on how easy it is to access the back of the motherboard where the CPU would be on the other side. This is on a case by case basis (no pun intended). Grab the plastic intel bracket, should have 4 standoffs on it, and fit it into the spot behind the CPU with the four pre-drilled holes in the motherboard. Then you're all set to mount the pump on the CPU!

Is it possible to replace the 92mm fans with different fans like LED case fans?

The fans can be replaced ... just measure the original and buy a replacement. The picture is accurate .. remove the 4 screws that hold the fan to the mount that clips onto the heat-sink.  LED fans would be a waste. The cooler is big and on the AMD mounting plate it can be mounted to discharge for rear or top discharge. Can't tell you if it is the same for Intel. You aren't going to get a lot of light in your case because of lack of room around the cooler intake and exhaust sides. I got a Enermax - Ostrog case with a big window on the side .... got it to be sure I'd have plenty of clearance for the cooler. If you're after light get this case .. lights on the front fans and out the top. Personally I prefer the case interior to be unlit so I can more clearly see the diagnostic LEDS on the Gigabyte motherboard through the smoke plexi-glass side panel.

I have a FX6800-01e with the stock cooler in it.  I am wondering if this is a suitable replacement and if it will fit in my case?

It is very large. I have a full sized tower, the Thermaltake overseer, and it just about fits with about an inch and a half between the cooler and one of my case fans. It also is a bit close to my ram. I wish I could upload a pic for better size comparison, but just know this thing is huge.

That being said, I love it!! It keeps my cousin cool as the other side of the pillow!!

Do you get good temps with the given thermal grease?

I'm trying to decide if I should order Arctic Silver or not with the Cooler Master Hyper D92.

Artic silver for your paste.  They are the best compound for thermal paste.  I did the same. this cooler does come with paste but do not use it.  Low quality but the cooler is awesome! Keeps my I7 4790k idle at 28-29c under load at 34
