Question 1

This is my first water cooled system.  This does not appear to have shipped with any fluid.  None in the box and can't see or hear any fluid in the equipment.  If I'm to fill my own liquid, which liquid should I use?

I assume you're saying there's no liquid because you can't see any under the clear plastic cover on the pump.  But the fluid is in there - that chamber doesn't fill with fluid.

would the 140mm fan fit the AMD Ryzen 7 1700?

As long as you buy the special AM4 bracket yes it will fit.  Be warned though the square finned radiator Cooler Master Advertises is false advertising.  It looks nothing like what you are going to get.  It's the same as any other radiator out there, I returned mine because of it and purchased the EVGA water cooler, the bracket was free from EVGA.

Will this mount correctly into my old mobo? ASUS M5A97

depends on the socket type on your motherboard.  If the socket type is not listed under the specifications than no it does not work.  That is an AM3+ socket board do you see it listed under the socket type?

Question 4

Will this work with the weird X mount on latest x299 LGA2066 boards? Specifically GIGABYTE AORUS X299 AORUS Gaming 3

Yes, it should. The X299 Aorus Gaming 3 processor cover has a removable piece over the processor to allow a water cooler. You might encounter clearance issues with your RAM, however, depending on what you are using. On that board, they are located fairly close to the processor.

Question 5

can u use 120 mm with this or only 140 mm?

From the manufacturers website, it appears there are mounting holes for both 120mm and 140mm fans. Do note that swapping out the 140 fans for 120 fans reduces the airflow area by about 25%, which is considerable. However, I do not have any empirical data to see how this actually affects the cooling capability of the unit.

Question 6

Just out of curiosity, does this actually use water or some sort of specialized coolant?

As most all in ones, it is not just water. There is some specialized formula that prevents the liquid from freezing/evaporating. Since it's a AIO, you cannot add more solution to it.

Question 7

I see it says compatible with the 1151 socket. however, I do not see the mounting bracket in the correct position to fit my Maximus IX hero. Is there mounting hardware not pictured here? Does anyone know for sure if it fits the LGA 1151 socket? thank you.

Yes it definitely fits the LGA 1151 socket. I just installed this on the MSI Z270 Gaming M7 board. Need to mount it before you install it in the tower. I did have trouble with the radiators however but just need to rotate it to get it in the right spot. The bracket didnt fit as snug as the instructions show it but it is secure once you screw it on a little tighter.

Question 8

This is my first liquid CPU cooler. Is it encouraged to mount the radiator/fan mount as the rear case fan? I'm not exactly sure where to put it. Thanks in advance.

It really depends on the build & what radiator size you are getting where the best place is. Just make sure to put it in the most Practical place you have, that just happens to be the back for most people. short tubing means for majority only other possible place you can locate is top.

common variables: 
what size radiator u bought & what size in case you have available to use.  
where it fits nicely (as u can see radiator is larger than fan so some spaces may be better than others)
can it reach comfortably not straining or stretching tubes
air flow style (how air is circulated typical ex. inward fans in front & side & outward fans in top & back)
