Can the clips be removed so the laptop isn't sitting on an angle on the desk?

Thanks to all that have answered.  I should have explained a little more.  I was just afraid because my laptop is 17inches (and pretty heavy) that if it sat on the "angle" (as best I can describe it) the way the picture shows, I didn't want the laptop to come flying off and land on my lap.  My current fan that I use is a Targus fan that sits on my desk, with the laptop resting on it, but the fan motor seems to not be as powerful as it once was.
