Does the metal height adjusment bar easily remove? So it can travel better in a laptop bag. It looks like the bare will keep it prety thick.

The hight adjustment is not removable. I have a pretty big laptop bag and the pad really doesn't fit. Also it's not as quite as I thought it would be. I would not reecomend this pad and if I had it to do over, would look at ones with multiple fans. It does't keep my Dell D820 all that cool very cool on low speed.

is it powered through usb? like do i plug the usb into my laptop and thats how it powers?

The unit does require a usb port to power the fan or a 5 volt DC adapter that's not included. It does provide you with a 4 port usb hub built into the stand.
