On modern hard drives it will vary.

The flatter black slot-style connectors are SATA power connectors (SATA-1.5/3.0/6.0) while the older White Four-Pin are for PATA (ATA-66/100/133). Usually all modern power supplies, even those for low power or older systems, will now carry both, or contain adapters for PATA-to-SATA or vice versa.
