This device is used to connect a hard drive to another computer by USB. It's useful when you have a good hard drive from a broken computer and you want to copy the files off it to a new computer. Also, if you have a hard drive with one interface type (SATA, EIDE, etc.) but you don't have that interface type in another computer, so long as the other computer has USB you can still connect the hard drive to copy files from it. This adapter has been useful when an old notebook computer breaks and I need to copy the files from it to my desktop computer.

Question 2

In your picture of the Coolmax CD-350-combo there are two USB connectors, ONE RED, and ONE BLACK. What are these two USB connectors connected to when the unit is installed?

Usually the black is all you need to connect when it comes to laptop hard drive.. 2.5" (usually your SATAs) but sometimes you need to draw a little more power on certain drives (on your bulky desktop drives, you have a 4 prong power source you can plug into.. this comes with this product and you only need the one USB "black") but not with laptop or 2.5 inch hard drives.    I've had to use the additional red usb cable on some older 2.5" IDE hard drives because one USB port did not offer enough juice to power it on.   Hope this helps.

I Would like to Transfer everything on my old drive, including the operating system, to a new drive.  Will the CoolMax 353, able to do it?

Here is my professional input, I am a Computer tech with 25 years experience.
Combo Sata-Ide USB converter is a remarkable handy device for connecting just about any hard drive combination via USB cable to another working desk top computer. I use Acronis true image 13 or later to create an image of the "source" hard drive with all data , programs , etc. I save the image on a external hard drive. 
I then disconnect the soure hard drive and put it in the draw for future reference. I purchase a new hard drive and install it in reference computer.
I then boot to acronis true image and this time choose 'restore " image file. Follow on screen directions and when you reboot, you will have your existing hard drive and all data / programs . 
I have never relied on the software that came with the combo drive. I use "proven" third party software like "Acronis true image" to get perfect results.

where is the vista driver?

not sure what you mean? everything is self contained. Just pug the usb into a port ad the device automatically installs any necessary drivers to function. I use it on a windows 7 desk top and have no operating issues. plug and play.

where does it conect to a in a unattched hard drive from my laptop?

This is not what I was sent. I was sent a look a like that had no red cover on the usb or white lettering. They lasted about 4 months.
