can i use this cable on an empty formatted hard drive just to transfer files back and forth? basically make a 120gb ssd drive like a flash drive

I have not tried to use this device in the way you are asking, so I can not answer your question with certainty. I do know the device can make a complete backup and I believe it can copy certain files through an advanced setup in the software that was provided. I went ahead and tried it on another SSD I had and it does allow you to access the drive just like any other drive in the my computer. Far as being able to format a drive that has not been formatted I'm not sure on that however I would have to say in my opinion someone would be able to format a new drive. I hope this helps you out. By the way the device and software worked flawlessly for me, It made switching over my old SSD with my new SSD a breeze.

Can this cable and software be used with other brand ssd?

Yes, I was able to use a new Samsung SSD with this cable.  The issue is not necessarily the brand of SSD you use; the issue is what OS you are using.  While I was able to "clone" a hard drive running Windows 8, I was not able to boot off of the cloned drive because of the new Windows 8 specs regarding boot partitions and reinstalling Windows 8.  Unlike Windows 7 and earlier, I do not believe cloning is as simple as it used to be.

Can I use this to just transfer my OS (Windows 8.1) to a SSD? Can I pick the programs I want to transfer or does it transfer whatever is on the drive you're cloning?

It makes a mirror image, or copy of the Drive that you use as the (Source) and copies it to the (destination drive). 
I did not see options to pick and choose what programs, so it will transfer whatever is on the source drive...completely.
A great way to back up both your operating system and computer.
You should remove things you don't want, or need before you make the copy / mirror image.

Will this allow me to clone 3.5 inch HDD's?

I tried this with my hard drive and I couldn't do it because I don't have a way to power that hard drive when it's outside of my PC, but if you can power yours then I think it can

The brand of SSD you are cloning to should not matter. I used this to clone my hard drive to an Samsung SSD on a Windows 7 system. I plugged the SSD in and it booted with no problems! However, if you are using a different OS or Windows 8.1 in particular, you may want to look through the other questions/answers already provided here, as I believe someone had a problem with Win 8.0 or 8.1. It's been about a year since I used this, but if I remember correctly, it comes with a generic cloning software (Acronis, I think), which was very easy to use.

I am dual booting two o/s's, will the cloning process preserve both o/s's?

It makes exact copy and you can choose to keep the old as is or format after.  I always choose keep as is,  just in case the clone failed and I can still slap the old hard drive back in. It'll  boot as before.

I have a Toshiba L-350 laptop (about 6years old) with a 300GB HDD. Everything is working fine, but just boots slooooooow and would like an SSD replacement.

The existing HDD drive has a Recovery partition. A few months ago i tried to clone a 840Evo SSD and the clone failed i believe due to the Recovery partition... I dont know for sure - could have been the cable... There is no USB3, only USB2 with this Toshiba laptop.
I have a new Samsung 850pro SSD 1.0TB and would like to try and clone the 300GB HDD again. Will this cable definitely clone the drive?

Hi Roger B, thank to call me, first i would like apology because I'm french and my english is .. bad.
the cable is perfect to link a PC and a SATA disk or SSD, no problem.
the USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 is just a question of velocity, in your case you have a USB 2.0 on our PC, the time to clone will be probably more long, but the result will be the same.
for the Recovery partition, traditionally this partition is not Windows partition, and when you try to clone with windows system, you don't clone the Rec Partition. You can make that with a software make for.
like easy recovery or similar.
with an 850Pro your computer will run like a rocket.

Can i use this to reformat a 2.5 hard drive to ntfs?

If your USB port can supply enough power to the 2.5 hard drive it should work. It will function as an adapter cable. I know it works with a SSD drive and I know it does not work with a 3.5. Most of the portable hard drives are laptop 2.5 drives and they work.

Question 10

I need to know if this will clone a HD to SSD using Windows 8.1. And if so, will the cloned SSD boot normally into Windows. If not, is there a way to make it boot?

I used the kit to clone another SSD but you can use it to clone an HD to SSD also. As long as the SSD has more capacity than the HD you are trying to clone. I used Windows 7 but it should work with Windows 8.1. It will also boot just like the drive you cloned if the drive you cloned was drive C:
