I'm being told that my old Asetek CPU liquid cooler is on it's way out.  I've never built or modified a PC before.  I assume my radiator is fine as the fans don't make any noise while in motion.  Can I simply remove my old Asetek CPU cooler and replace it with this model?

No, this is truly just a cosmetic upgrade.  You remove the current faceplate on your Corsair AIO and install this one to customize the images that you see.  AIO stands for All In One and come with fans and everything you need to run it.  That I know of there is no way to swap out anything on an AIO except for the fans that attach to the outside of it. You will need a new AIO if yours is going out.

does this come pre-installed with thermal paste?

No, this is just the LCD that plugs into the AIO unit.  My first LCD burned up due to me using a old cable that allowed too much wattage and I was able to get this display kit and working again.  Was a lot cheaper than if the whole AIO burned up which I got lucky it didn't.

This is an upgrade kit for owners of a Cappelix type Corsair AIO. It sits on top of an already installed AIO block via magnets. It is wholly separate from the AIO itself and relies on iCUE to get info.

You can, yes. You want to use the Dual Bar Preset when configuring it in Corsair iCue.
