I build gaming computers for fun and have a couple of the Sound Blaster cards (Audigy SE 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHZ) you are asking about in builds running Windows 7.  I haven't had any problems getting them to function and I like the sound quality the add to the systems.

I think it is a matter of what your primary use will be. I am somewhat hearing impaired so I'm not listening to full range music, but my use is for 48 kHz sampling rate decoding of digital audio; the on board OEM soundcard just won't work (for my application) while the Creative SoundBlaster Audigy SE 7.1 Channels 24 96 kHz PCI Interface Sound Card does the job at a decent price. A cheaper card that doesn't work (for my application) or a more expensive card would be a waste of money. YMMV.

what is the height of the metal bracket and did it come with a different size for the metal bracket ?

Funny you should ask that. I thought it did but that was the pci-e version.  So I cut bent, drilled and installed the now half height card.

Would this be a good sound card for a 5.1 surround sound system?  Can I plug my mic into it as well?  How long does it last?

the pink is for Mic and should support 5.1  analog it does not support 7.1  analog which is what I got. I am not sure on the length of it lasting.

Yep...the computer it is in is currently running Windows 7 and it is on a relatively new Intel MB that has a PCI slot.

Yes, I used this sound card without any problems on Windows 8.1 for an entire year. I recently upgraded to windows 10 and the sound card continues to work perfectly. I use the card for listening to music and playing video games, nothing beyond that.

I have an 'not too old' desktop(2004-2005), and I was using an "(2004)EVGA GeForce 8400 GS 256-P2-N733-LR Video Card" and the dvi port is gone. I want to replace it with "EVGA GeFore GT 610 video card(01g-p3-2615-KR). In watch a video, they said these new video cards were backwards compatible. Will it work? 
I will be running dual monitors.

The same is for a Creative Labs Card. I looking at a Creative Labs Blaster Audigy SE 7.1 Channel 24bit 96KHz PCI interface.  Is this card backwards compatible. I believe I a Intel Motherboard.

Yes it is. Mine is in an Intel MB that has both PCI Express and PCI. I used the PCI Express slot for the graphics card. I used the PCI slot for the Audigy SE 7.1 card and it works well. I would recommend when you install it, don't bother with the CD. Go straight to the Creative Labs website and download the newest drivers and software.

I purchased this sound card because my existing sound card was not compatible with a racing simulation game I wanted to play.  This card was recommended by someone who new it worked with the game.

Yes it is. I bought two of them to work with my Dell Dimension 8300s when converting to Wondows 7 in early 2014. After installing them in the previous card's PCI slots all was basically plug and play. Performance has been flawless.
