will this work in a desktop?

This will work inside any computer that has all of the following specs:
1) The case has a holder for a 2.5" drive.
2) The motherboard has a SATA connection.  To get the highest speed use with a motherboard that has SATA III.

Is this backward compatible to sata 2 ?y

SATA-3 is compatible with SATA-2. You will lose some speed however as SATA-2 is rated at 300 MB/s whereas this drive can hit up to 500 MB/s I believe. I don't think you'll notice it though and it's still miles ahead of any spinning drive (mainly because seek-times are much better). So it's definitely worth the purchase if you're upgrading from a non-SDD drive.
