Yes so long as your motherboard supports it.  If you use one of those PCI M.2 expansion cards, the BIOS might not recognize it as a bootable device.  Some motherboards do.  But if your motherboard has native m.2 slot then it should definitely support booting off it.  This is seen just like another SATA drive.

Question 2

Hey, will this work in an Intel DH67BL motherboard? It has two PCI Express ports but I am not sure they are equivalent to the M.2 port.

I’m not familiar with that motherboard but to use a M.2 drive you need to M.2 port. In addition the M.2 port needs to support SATA mode for this drive. My MB only supports the faster PCIE mode. The MB I used this drive in was a newer board the support both SATA and PCIE mode via a setting in the BIOS. The physical M.2 interface is the same the difference is whether the SATA protocol sits in the middle.  On a side note SATA is widely supported in Windows while PCIE mode might require a driver.

This SSD uses a SATA 3 protocol contributed Lee rather than an NVMe protocol controller so you data transfer rates will be the same as 2.5” SATA 3 SSD drives. It will work in your motherboard without interferinnwith your SATA plug ports but it won’t move data as quickly as an NVMe drive. For the average Joe PC user, you would be hard pressed to notice much difference between a SATA3 and NVMe protocol drive for normal usage. This drive fits in the M.2 socket on your motherboard. The one that I have is plenty fast for what I use it for.

can I use this to upgrade a HP 17-x001cy-notebook?

I looked at your computer service manual on-line and it shows a slot for a 'stick' solid-state hard drive (M.2 2280).  So it should run this drive just fine, but you may be better off just upgrading the 2.5" box drive to a solid-state drive (Crucial & Samsung are the best).  I would contact HP support or the store where it was purchased to make sure the socket for the stick drive actually exists on your notebook.  I have opened some and the socket is missing, even though there is a place for on located on the mainboard.

I hope this helps.  If you do upgrade to a M.2 drive, keep the old drive in place and use it for a back-up drive (for files, photos, etc.).

This drive will work in your laptop. I have a 500GB model in my desktop and it works very well. The 1TB mode is almost the best that you can put in your laptop with SATA protocol.

my motherboard doesnt support this type of drive natively not all m.2 are the same so instead of sending it back what kind of pcie adapter can i use with it to get it to work in my Asus maximus hero VII Z97 motherboard?

You need a PCI-e adapter that has a m.2 SATA slot.  The adapter will also have a standard SATA connector on it, so it will connect the PCI-e adapter to a SATA connector on your motherboard.  Such an adapter can be found here and other sites.
