I had to give this fryer away to a single friend and repurchase a larger fryer because it was to small. If you are looking for something to fry up a hand full of french fries or a single chicken breast then this fryer is for you. If not, I would look at others.

Can the plastic oil well be removed to clean?

No, it is integral to the unit, which cannot be immersed in water or put in the dishwasher. That being said, it is not difficult to clean and shouldn't prejudice you against this item.
