MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost-007 15.6
  • Verified Owner
  • neweggOwned For: 1 week to 1 month

Pros: 1. Quiet fans, stays cool (for a gaming machine, obviously it ain't sittin' on your lap)

2. Love the keyboard, colors, feedback, font are all cool

3. Excellent speed and graphics display

Cons: 1. Build quality. Not what you'd expect for $1,600.

2. Trackpad responsiveness - not very much.

3. "Warranty void if opened" sticker on casing = no upgrades

Other Thoughts: I'm not going into details on specs, you can read that in the description and there are benchmarks all over Youtube. This is a review for the average gamer. this is an awesome computer and would get 5 stars from me if it were not for the subpar quality of plastic components around the screen. The bezel on the front separates from the LCD ever so slightly, as mentioned in many other reviews. Additionally, there is a long plastic tube that runs between the hinges that is a little loose. Definitely lacking the solid feel of the Razer Blade, for instance, its main competition. The display, however, is top notch.

Runs FFXIV, SWTOR, WoW and Wildstar all at highest graphics settings beautifully. I have encountered zero lag at highest settings in any of these. I don't play FPS games or the latest action titles, so can't speak to those.

The trackpad seems to be a common gripe among reviewers, and I concur. It has a tendency to pick up palm edges and get stuck, and the clicking responsiveness just isn't there; they really should have included separate mouse buttons. If you don't game with a mouse, be prepared to do so if you purchase this machine, or else be a bit frustrated from time to time. It isn't AWFUL, just pops up now and again (I still don't use a mouse for my MMOs, by the way, despite the pad's shortcomings).

General agreement among all reviewers regarding the Steel Series backlit keyboard and accompanying software. No dissent from me, looks and feels fantastic.

stays cool, but you aren't going to be resting this machine on your lap. I don't use a cooling pad, simply a small lap desk, and I feel no heat whatsoever. Fans are pretty quiet, much more so than the GE60 Apache, which I returned in order to purchase the Ghost.

Here's the bottom line on why I purchased this machine: The GE60 Apache was great, but too hot and fans were too loud. I started comparing the GS60 Ghost and the Razer Blade. I settled on this due to the cheaper price and greater amount of storage for data. Do I regret it? No. 14' on the Blade is too small. Blade Pro is too big. Is another 500-600 bucks worth a better build quality in the Blade's aluminum chassis? Nah, not to me. Worth the clickable buttons? Nope. I am pleased with this machine other than the separation of the screen bezel and loose plastic piece. If it really starts to bother me, I may just hit it with a dab of super glue and move on with my life. Buy and enjoy.
