SATA power connector in new ones

Mediasonic HP1-SU3 USB 3.0 2 Port External USB 3.0 PCI Express Card - LINUX Software RAID supported
Mediasonic HP1-SU3 USB 3.0 2 Port External USB 3.0 PCI Express Card - LINUX Software RAID supported

Pros: Good new everyone: As the title says - the one they shipped to me calls for a SATA power connector instead of the old school floppy power connector, so if you have a newer system with a modern PSU no worries - no need to hunt for an adapter.

Cons: None for the price (FAR)

Overall Review: The model number on the box is the same as the listing.

Most Critical Review

Odd cooling and weak graphics

eMachines Desktop PC T3656 Intel Celeron 440 1GB DDR2 160GB HDD Intel GMA 950 Windows Vista Home Basic
eMachines Desktop PC T3656 Intel Celeron 440 1GB DDR2 160GB HDD Intel GMA 950 Windows Vista Home Basic

Pros: The ECS motherboard in this machine actually allows you to upgrade to Core 2 Duos, has two PWM fan headers.

Cons: The stock setup had a filter in the EXHAUST fan vent in the back - no wonder the processor was registering 56C degrees! On board graphics is 2.2 on the Windows Experience Index in Vista. You're supposed to use filters at the INTAKE if anything. I don't know what these OEM guys are thinking sometimes.

Overall Review: I put a Xeon 3060 in there and it's running with no problems. After researching the motherboard, which is v3.0 or 3.1 according to Speccy and finding out this chip is the same as a Core 2 Duo, E6600 if I remember right. Tripling the processing speed. Temperature is in the 30's now after adding a 90mm PWM exhaust fan with the same Cooler Master CPU cooler remounted with Arctic Alumina, (and REMOVING the filter) which is capable of moving far more air (like 60cfm) than this system will ever need. Hopefully Newegg will post this review for the sake of having a good database, even if this is discontinued. People come here for this info and hey, they can buy the other stuff needed to upgrade the machine here.

Works w/MX Linux Wildflower out of the box

Pros: For the size I was quite impressed with the range of this thing. I had this sitting around because the Linux support wasn't there yet but was glad this is now integrated, I guess into Debian Bullseye and kernel v 5.10. System info shows it is Realtek 8812AU chip ID 0bda:0811.

Cons: Just that the Linux support took so long, but being open source I suppose it's expected.

Overall Review: I would recommend it especially now, works great in Windows and Linux.

Nice set of features

ECS G41T-M7 LGA 775 Intel G41 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
ECS G41T-M7 LGA 775 Intel G41 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: I like that you have PATA and SATA, it uses socket 775 yet takes DDR3 which gives you a lot of choices in CPU as well as cheaper ram options.

Cons: Can't really think of any for the price it was bought at.

Overall Review: I installed a Xeon X3320 in mine after I found out it is the same as the Q9300, which is on the ECS list of supported CPUs. It's running great and cost $35 used from that auction site which we can't mention by name, (groan) great savings over a Core2Quad though it is actually the same. This is a "sweet spot" in terms of low cost options with the memory, CPU and ability to use old drives. I might try the socket 771 adapter with an even more powerful chip with another board some day..

Excellent performance to noise ratio

Rosewill ROCF-11004 - 120mm Computer Case Cooling Fan - Hydro-Dynamic Bearing, Silent, 2-Speed with PWM Control
Rosewill ROCF-11004 - 120mm Computer Case Cooling Fan - Hydro-Dynamic Bearing, Silent, 2-Speed with PWM Control

Pros: I am using this as the case fan with no fan on the tower CPU heatsink, (also meant for 120mm fans and very close anyway) also since it's a 35 watt TDP chip. VERY quiet, for my use it only runs at 950rpm and keeps my cpu temp under 30C most of the time, as low as 25C minimum.

Cons: None really, could be cheaper but watch for rebate offers and sales..

Overall Review: For a low power machine with a SSD this is really all the cooling I need.

Flaky

Pretec i-Disk Sports-Soccer 4GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive
Pretec i-Disk Sports-Soccer 4GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive

Pros: It looks like a ball?

Cons: Linux Live USB creator has a hard time recognizing it. Even after I unplugged everything from the hub and then it saw it, it asked me to re-insert the disk after selecting all options. None of my other USB flash drives does this.

Overall Review: Obviously there's a reason why this is so cheap, I got it for kids hoping it will be a fun shape but if it doesn't work what's the point? Save your money for something that actually works.
