Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5

Pros: Was a fast drive... back when it worked.

Cons: It was used as the primary drive in a well used system for about a year... then it was retired to offline backup use - kept in a static bag - climate controlled.

After not using it for about 3 months... it will now no longer power up. Won't even spin. Full data loss. Warranty return underway.... yet again.

Went and looked at the stack of dead harddrives I have here (which were out of warranty when the failed)... and guess what. All seagate. Everyone one of them. I won't be buying any more seagate drives....

Western Digital WD Green WD20EARX 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5
  • neweggOwned For: more than 1 year

Pros: price point

Cons: It doesn't actually keep your data. It pretendends to hold it for a short, random period of time, and then throws it all away.

Horrible quality.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this drive to use as an off-line backup. I stored my data on it, then stored it in an ESD bag, in a fire safe. I would remove it about every 3 months, and update the data stored on it.

After just over a year of ownership - with a total on time as reported by the drive - of 5 days - the drive completely failed.

Waiting for the RMA now, so they can ship me a replacment drive, which will likely have already failed once, before they 'repaired' it, and sent it to me. I don't expect the replacement to last long either...

GIGABYTE GA-X79-UP4 LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

  • neweggOwned For: 1 week to 1 month

Pros: Many overclock options, runs solid once configured. 64 GB of RAM :-)

Sensors on the board are supported by the standard sensors tooling that Linux has - so you can get your temp readouts and control your fan speeds from linux.

Cons: Poor documentation. Very picky about which memory slots are populated. Very difficult to diagnose bad memory modules (as opposed to the board being unhappy about an empty slot in the wrong place).

Its only fail mode seems to be "beep beep beep" and not even any documentation about what the beep pattern(s) mean.

In the past, I've bought much cheaper boards that had _much_ better debug tools (leds, lcd readouts, many documented beep codes).

Tech support from the company is poor. 1 day turnaround for each e-mail, and little useful information at all in return.

Other Thoughts: The "3D" config menu is silly and slow. Wish it had a way to disable it and go directly to the traditional BIOS.

USB3 port on the back of the board is a bit flakey - plugging in a USB2 device causes the device to not work, AND the ethernet port to drop out. Not sure if it is a hardware issue, a BIOS issue, or a Linux support issue. Seems to work with USB3 devices.
