ASUS CuCore EAH4850

ASUS CuCore Series Radeon HD 4850 1GB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card EAH4850 CUCORE TOP/2DI/1GD3
ASUS CuCore Series Radeon HD 4850 1GB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card EAH4850 CUCORE TOP/2DI/1GD3

Pros: Probably the fastest 4850 around with the highest potential for OC'ing available. I coupled this with a promo code, discount and a rebate to get a truly amazing card for the money. Runs rock solid and handles all the games I play on high settings. Stays surprisingly cool (see more on that in "Other thoughts"). Some of these Radeon 4000 series cards are tremendous values as they begin to be replaced by 5000 series brothers. There is a definite benefit in running "previous generation" hardware as the drivers are mature and seem to have had all the bugs worked out of them. Newegg, as always, was spot on with service. I think it might make sense to just have my paycheck direct deposited to them...

Cons: The card is a little loud, as others have reported. But most of the noise that is noticeable is during bootup when the fan spins up to 100% for a few seconds before choking back to 20%-ish where it seems to idle. I think this bootup reving tends to mislead people into thinking the card is actually louder than it really is. It is however louder than the Sapphire HD4850 it sits beside in Crossfirex. I really wish ASUS had included HDMI on this card. It seems to be somewhat of a missing feature that's standard on the final generations of the 4000 series cards. Obviously not DX11 ready...but then again, neither am I. I have no DX11 games with no plans to purchase any in the near future.

Overall Review: I have this card Crossfired with a Sapphire HD4850. The Sapphire has been a good card for me and I was able to overclock it to the same 670 core speed as the ASUS and OC both memory speeds to 1020. The only drawback is the Sapphire has only 512 GDDR3 so both cards run with an effective 512. I've been very satisfied with my Crossfirex results, not so much in obvious fps increase, those actually have only been modest, but my overall gaming experience is much smoother. With these two cards I essentially have near 4870's for a total cash outlay of $150. Incredible value. Both cards discharge air into the case, so I was concerned about temperatures, but so far that hasn't been a problem. The ASUS actually runs a degree or two cooler than the Sapphire, and it's the primary card. So far my experience with Crossfirex has been favourable, and there is no better value for a high quality graphics solution for a gamer on a budget.

Bugs!

Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures PC Game
Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures PC Game

Pros: Perhaps the best graphics quality of any MMO I've seen to date. Tries to be faithful to the fictional era/world created by R.E. Howard. The Egg was, as always, fast and good on delivery.

Cons: Bugs. Lag. The most cumbersome update/patch system that I've ever encountered. Bugs. Lag. There's an additional $30 expansion that you really need to play this game. Bugs. Lag. Optimized for nVIDIA cards, significant drop in performance with equal ATI cards (yeah, I have ATI cards) Bugs. Lag. The entire game world is apparently devoted to PVP either in solo play or massive, laggy raids that resemble a PowerPoint presentation in slide show mode. If you ache to replay Street Fighter, this might be the game for you. Oh...and before I forget to mention it...Bugs. Lag.

Overall Review: Honestly with games like DDO and LotRO adopting the "Free to Play" model for MMO's I'm not sure why you'd choose to pay for this software, pay for the expansion and then pay again every month for the dubious priviledge of using it. I'm glad I only dropped $4.99 on this experiment.

Great graphics!

XFX Double D Radeon HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card FX-795A-TDFC
XFX Double D Radeon HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card FX-795A-TDFC

Pros: Solid, strong performance in all the games I play. Max settings at 1900X1080. I think this may be one of the best looking cards I've ever owned...its a shame to see so little of it inside a pc case! With the improvements being made in subsequent driver releases, this card nips at the heels of a GTX 670 at almost $100 less! This card is whisper quiet at stock settings.

Cons: If you're looking to seriously overclock, I don't think this is your card. I was able to apply a modest OC to 950MHz/1350MHz before I wasn't entirely comfortable with temps and noise. If you want to really push an OC you might consider the Gigabyte Windforce cooler or the Asus DCu. As with all OC's, your mileage will vary.

Overall Review: XFX now has, hands down, the BEST warranty in the graphics card industry. Now that EVGA has watered down their warranty to point of...umm...just about the same as everyone else, XFX is the last to still offer a true, lifetime warranty. Just be aware, not all models qualify for it. I've never had any problems with XFX graphics cards, but then again, I've never had one fail. This is my fourth.

Great speakers!

Genius GX Gaming SW-G2.1 1250 38 Watts RMS 2.1 Speaker System
Genius GX Gaming SW-G2.1 1250 38 Watts RMS 2.1 Speaker System

Pros: Given the pricepoint, these are awesome speakers! True, they're not going to wow and audiophile but that's not what they're designed to do. They have a nice look and the separate power/control module served my layout perfectly.

Cons: I'd consider the base to be a little "mushy" but in speakers less than $100 all bass will be a little mushy.

Overall Review: These speakers will perform on par with Creative or Logitech models costing almost twice as much. If in doubt, just buy them!

Win Win

PowerColor PCS+ Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card AX7870 2GBD5-2DHPP
PowerColor PCS+ Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card AX7870 2GBD5-2DHPP

Pros: Great card. Clocked a bit higher than default 7870's with a fairly compact pcb and shroud. Good looks...except for the trim sticker on the front...that was a bit cheesy. Can handle max setting at 1900X1080 for all the games I play. Incredible deal when purchased on sale...with a game...with a rebate...with free shipping. Thanks Newegg. This may be the best upper-midrange graphics solution for someone with limited space.

Cons: The dragons are harder to kill in Skyrim now but still only drop one soul.

Overall Review: I try to stay open to both AMD and nVidia cards each generation. This time around AMD seems to outperform at virually every price point making the Team Green cards seem almost irrelevant. Competition in the component industry is the best thing for us enthusiasts!

Mostly great!

Corsair Vengeance K90 Black/Metal USB Wired Gaming Performance, MMO Mechanical Keyboard
Corsair Vengeance K90 Black/Metal USB Wired Gaming Performance, MMO Mechanical Keyboard

Pros: Beautiful, awesome, responsive keyboard. I think it's had more impact on my typing skills than gaming skills. I love the construction and the brushed aluminum deck. The backlighting is some of the best I've seen with significant differences between settings and good uniformity. The mech switches have great tactile response, although this being my first mechanical keyboard I don't have much point of reference. I dismiss the criticisms about the lack of being fully mechanical...I'd rather have a little cost saving than extra expense for keys you use...oh...almost never.

Cons: Mine arrived with one key light out...it's the #8 on the number pad. I decided to just live with it rather than RMA. Mine has never worked in bios...so, as a result, I always have to have another keyboard around when changing bios settings...really kind of annoying and hence -1 egg.

Overall Review: My old keyboard was a Steelseries Merc Stealth. I loved the layout and feel of that keyboard, with the possible exception of the del key. Hey Corsair...make your next keyboard have the build quality and feel of the K90, but put it into a more ergo style (like the merc stealth) with a left-hand game pad! That would be a definite must buy for me!
