Abbyy limits number of frresh installs

ABBYY FineReader 11 Professional
ABBYY FineReader 11 Professional

Pros: Abbyy Finereader Professional is wonderful product and I have been using it since I purchased level 6. What I recently learned, though, was a shocker. I am one who, from time to time rebuilds his computer. That is, I scrub the hard drive, reload the OS, apps and data. It is time consuming but produces a really clean computer free of the infamous blue screens of death. IF you do this, or change computers, you are going to be in trouble sooner than you realize. Abbyy limits the number of fresh installations to five. After that, you will have to pay Abbyy again as if you were a new or upgrading customer.

Cons: Limited number of fresh installs

Excellent -- for the money

iView 3500STBII Multi-Function Digital Converter Box with Recording and Media Playback
iView 3500STBII Multi-Function Digital Converter Box with Recording and Media Playback

Pros: The unit produces a good picture. Telephone tech support is responsive and USA based. HDMI output and RCA output for audio work together.

Cons: The menu will show up on top of whatever channel was last selected. This can be annoying but resolved by switching to a blank channel. The daily scheduling option is for all seven days. There is no weekday scheduling option. I found that my unit got confused when trying to schedule successive days when the program went over the date line. (i.e. 2300 to 0100) There is no chase capability. If you want to watch a program that you have recorded, you have to wait until it has finished recording. The documentation is in small print and could be a lot better but that seems to be the norm now-a-days.

Overall Review: I purchased this unit on sale and was amazed at how much bang for the buck that I got. The unit handles the lower channels from my cable service --2,4,5,7,9,11,13 &21 plus sub channels. I'd be thrilled to find a similar unit, hopefully with the cons above worked out, that would handle all of the cable channels. I'm sure that they can do it. Also, oddly enough, a lot of the procedures and info provided make sense only to the technically inclined; Joe TV watcher isn't going to be able to handle this. But then again, this is becoming true for a lot of this stuff.

variable readings

Precision One 7853 Removable Remote Glass LCD Digital Body Fat Scale
Precision One 7853 Removable Remote Glass LCD Digital Body Fat Scale

Pros: Attractive unit with digital readout

Cons: I purchased this to be used primarily as a scale for daily weight checking. Unfortunately, the readout reliability varies by as much as +/- 2 pounds making the scale inadequate for this purpose.

nice clock radio

COBY Alarm Clock/Radio For iPod CSMP120
COBY Alarm Clock/Radio For iPod CSMP120

Pros: see other thoughts

Cons: see other thoughts

Overall Review: The radio has a nice compliment of features and a quality level that would only be expected in a more expensive piece of equipment. The radio has excellent sensitivity. The tuning, as is the case with a lot of contemporary radios, lacks the tuning vernier that makes tuning easy but it can gotten used to. I'd also like to have seen a brighter tuning indicator. The FM antenna supplied is just a piece of dangling wire. It does work better than something wrapped up inside the box but is a bit tacky. These are only minor complaints. I have no plans for the iPod input so it would have been nice if a plug cover was supplied so as to keep out the dust. I'll put something together. I expressly planned to use the headphone output to drive a pillow speaker. This worked fine. I was surprised to see such a strong volume level and sound quality and the size of the brick powering the unit. This is a healthy power supply. The clock numerals are certainly large; no need to fumble for glasses to read these numbers! Over all, this is a nice clock radio that well serves the function without being costly.

license problems

NUANCE PDF Converter Professional 6
NUANCE PDF Converter Professional 6

Pros: The product is AOK

Cons: I have used level 4 for several years and ran into trouble with the license key in 2007. I'd installed on too many computers. I uninstalled on the secondary computers and customer service issued me a new license code. From what has been said here and in other forums as well, it looks like the licensing problem has gotten much worse. Have the accountants taken over at Nuance and reigned in the programmers?

the license key mess

NUANCE PDF Converter Professional 6
NUANCE PDF Converter Professional 6

Pros: I've had level 4 for some years and had a license key problem which customer support straightened out 3 years ago.

Cons: But apparently, from what I am seeing here and at the Amaz. forum, the problem has gotten worse for Nuance products. It looks like the accountants have taken over and the programmers have been vanquished!
