Pros: Solid, reliable, decent performance for its class so far, comparatively very quiet, great interface, great features. Too many to list. The DSM is the best NAS OS I have ever used. Worth the extra premium for Synology products. I love how even the lowest-end products (the J series) gets the full OS treatment, and it works extremely well. If Synology keeps up the quality control of the DSM OS, I'll be a customer for years and years. This is the first product in a long time that I truly love (in a geek way!). Very impressive for all it can do. I definitely won't be "rolling my own server" in the future now that I've had a taste of Synology.

Cons: The DS413j runs a little warm compared to my ReadyNAS Ultra and other devices I have. I did not like seeing my hard drive temperatures in the 40-45C range when I first set it up during the RAID build process. Again, I also have a DS212J, ReadyNAS and other devices and the drive temps are much lower in those, usually 32-38 in my ambient environment. However, I researched a little more on the temp issue and the drive temps appear to be within acceptable range for these drives (a mixture of Seagate, Hitachi and WD). I also found out that it is possible to manually edit the config file of the unit to reduce the temps further if I want to. I came to the conclusion that Synology has tuned the fan profile to keep the DS413j as quiet as possible, while preventing the drives from going over 45C. So this may actually be a plus in the long run. As soon as a drive hits 46C, no matter the ambient condition, the fans kick in to the next level, and the temp drops right back down. So I think the profile I am running has a threshold at 45C. At some point soon, I'll go into the profile to change that threshold to 40C. So, this is not that big of an issue to me -- the trade off for those warmer temps is how quiet the device runs, which is vastly superior in noise level to my ReadyNAS, for example. So all in all, I think I'm okay with this aspect, since I can at least edit the profile later if I want to. I wish they would allow an easier way to edit the fan profile though. One other very minor negative is that I'm not crazy about the physical design of the device. But I don't plan on spending time staring at it. :-) So that's irrelevant. Build-quality, it's fine, and that's what matters to me.

Overall Review: Other than that, the performance of the unit is perfectly acceptable for this class/price range. A bit slower than I hoped (I had high expectations for my first Synology), but still in the same general league as my ReadyNAS Ultra (an Intel-based unit), and yet this was much more affordable and with far better software and features. So not really a negative there either. If I had the extra money, I would have sprung for the Intel-based Synology. but that's significantly more expensive. But in any case, I don't regret the purchase at all, and look forward to years of great service. If this hangs in there as I expect it to, I'll give it to my wife in two years and spring for Synology's mid-range Intel line. :-) So overall, very little negative, and all the positives more than compensate -- this would be a 4.5 star review, but I'll round up to 5-star in all fairness. There really isn't a better competing product in my view, considering the price/class.

Pros: Price.

Cons: Just awful. I rarely spend the time reviewing things, but this is just a poor product compared to others, in terms of overall user experience. It gave me all sorts of problems with my network, firewall, slowed three separate computers down. Had numerous issues telling Windows that I actually had an antivirus product installed (which were resolved), switched modes on me (from autopilot), etc. Detected false positive on file that passed ESET and Kaspersky and MS Security Essentials. I don't understand the hype of this product. I will NEVER install it again. I even tried again with the latest release that just came out... similar issues. Just can't believe these guys are highly rated. ESET and Kaspersky are better in my experience.

Pros: Great price, great performance, great reliability so far. Very happy with this purchase.

Cons: The biggest news since I bought this from Newegg just a few months ago, is that Netgear has just announced their new OS for the new generation of NAS devices, and they have said they will NOT provide this new OS for their prior generation. That is INSANE. I will never purchase another Netgear NAS device again. I should have bought Synology, that support their devices with OS upgrades for YEARS. What a waste of money. ReadyNAS users are very upset about this decision, and Netgear's callous product lifecycle support is now known. Terrible, emabarrassing.

Pros: Worked out great so far. USB3 is not quite as fast as I had expected, but this enclosure is not to blame. This enclosure does its job without fuss. I've been using it with a 2TB Samsung drive and it remains cool and quiet.

Cons: Not as fast as I hoped, but that's the hype of USB3 for you. No USB3 device I've tried so far has lived up to the hype, so I can't really blame this enclosure.
