No surprises

ASUS Q87M-E/CSM LGA 1150 Intel Q87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
ASUS Q87M-E/CSM LGA 1150 Intel Q87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: - Zero problems; exactly what I expect with an ASUS board. - Supports everything you expect out of a modern workstation: VT-x, VT-d, and vPro. - Looks nice (not that I have seen it since I installed it).

Cons: PCI slots? Would have strongly preferred PCIe 1x slots in those positions.

Overall Review: Most of the things I love about this board are a direct result of the Q87 chipset. The stability is on the board manufacturer using high quality parts, though, and ASUS has always been good about that. With a little over a month of use, it has been totally solid.

Very mixed experience...

APEX DM-387 Black Steel Micro ATX Media Center / Slim HTPC Computer Case w/ ATX12V TFX 275W Power Supply
APEX DM-387 Black Steel Micro ATX Media Center / Slim HTPC Computer Case w/ ATX12V TFX 275W Power Supply

Pros: - Small half-depth case that fits MicroATX motherboards. - Quiet (nearly silent on my desk next to my monitors). - Good ventilation and airflow. - Handy, easily-removed, drive cage. - Cheap. - Not a box of razors like other cheap cases. - Nice magnetic door closing for the front. - Lights on the front are visible through the door, but not painfully bright at night. - Single thumb screw for the side.

Cons: - Considering the drive cage has probably over 100 complex holes for ventilation, there is only one spot you can install an SSD. There is plenty of room for at least 3-4 of them inside if it just had the holes. Since I used these at work and had no interest in drilling holes myself, my SSDs are zip-tied together and attached it to the only available mounting location. - The first one was perfect, but the second one had a motherboard tray (which is not removable) that was offset about half an inch down in relation to the outside of the case, so the motherboard and IO shield do not mate up correctly. This is a severe flaw that I would return it over if it probably wouldn't cost as much to ship it back as it cost to buy. Really bad QA/manufacturing. - Front ports are USB 2.0, not 3.0... They're also upside-down. - As mentioned elsewhere, the top exhaust fan could move forward with no ill effects to allow for larger power supplies. - On the one I tried to install a DVD drive in, the cage kept the drive from inserting all the way. I have no clue why it had that stop in there.

Overall Review: The first one was my development box with an i7-4770S and 2 SSDs, all of which barely gets warm in there. At full load the exiting air is not much above ambient and the processor rarely bumps over 60C. At idle it runs at only slightly above ambient. That one went together perfectly, aside from the lack of a second place for an SSD. It'd be worth investing in a 3.5" to 2.5" adapter if you plan to use 2 drives if you want to make it all clean. The second was a mess. The audio jacks are tight up against the bottom of the IO shield opening without the shield simply because I had no other choice short of burning money on a return or ordering another case. I gave up on the DVD drive, which I scavenged from their former PC and they never use anyhow. The upshot is that it runs just as cool as mine and the total price for the PC was very reasonable. Since this price range is pretty packed with options in the MicroATX and Mini-ITX form factor, I'll get another case for my next build. I wish others put a fan on top like this one, though.

Accountants love it

SanDisk Extreme 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SDSSDX-120G-G25
SanDisk Extreme 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SDSSDX-120G-G25

Pros: - Much faster than any HDD. - Cheap. - Big enough to run Windows and store a little extra stuff.

Cons: - None yet, knock on wood.

Overall Review: A couple of these went into super cheap desktops I built to replace slightly-cheaper desktops that were failing after 6 months. These were deployed to a couple people in the company - one in accounting, one in supply. They've been workhorses and the only way they get passed on is when someone quits. The accountant that inherited one of these PCs is super protective of it because it is, by far, the fastest computer in their office, in spite of one of the cheapest last-gen i3 processors you could buy at the time (i3-3220) and the passage of another 4 years of time...

Finally died on me

PC Power & Cooling ModXStream Pro Series 600 Watt 80+ Semi-Modular Active PFC Performance Grade ATX PC Power Supply (OCZ600MXSP)
PC Power & Cooling ModXStream Pro Series 600 Watt 80+ Semi-Modular Active PFC Performance Grade ATX PC Power Supply (OCZ600MXSP)

Pros: - Ran continuously for 4 full years in my gaming rig without missing a beat.

Cons: - Died after those 4 years without any warning. - The motherboard cable was a little short for my SG10B case and the power connector orientation is unusual, so it was tricky getting it in there.

Overall Review: I'd recommend it and buy it again if they were still sold. I'll probably go with something more expensive with a longer warranty this time, though.

Easily the best bang for your buck in 23" IPS monitors

Dell UltraSharp U2312HM IPS-Panel Black 23" 8ms Swivel & Height Adjustable Widescreen LCD Monitor with LED 300 cd/m2 2 Million:1 DCR (1000:1)
Dell UltraSharp U2312HM IPS-Panel Black 23" 8ms Swivel & Height Adjustable Widescreen LCD Monitor with LED 300 cd/m2 2 Million:1 DCR (1000:1)

Pros: - Brilliant image quality. - IPS panel (This means wider viewing angles, better color, and better brightness.) - Excellent anti-reflective coating. - Very fast response for an IPS panel in this price range. - No dead or weak pixels anywhere on any of the displays. - Like every Dell UltraSharp LCD, this one has an awesome stand. It puts the stands on every other LCD in this price range to shame. So adjustable and they even have a very usable cable management hole. - Three inputs (DVI, VGA, and DisplayPort). - USB hub inside with 4 ports (2 back, 2 side). - An easy-to-use configuration menu that rotates. - Doesn't have a power brick and proprietary power connector like older UltraSharp monitors. Just a standard power cable like your computer uses.

Cons: - I don't know if every one is affected, but all three of mine had problems with their DisplayPort inputs. Using a DP->DVI converter fixed the problem. We'll see if the next three I get have the same problem.

Overall Review: If you asked anyone I know what computer manufacturer I loathe, every one would say "Dell" without any hesitation. Dell computers are pure evil. They will have some component made that is almost standard, aside from one or two little things, that makes them impossible to fix without their outrageously-overpriced parts. I'd never buy one of their computers willingly and passionately hate supporting them. Their UltraSharp LCDs, on the other hand, are the best I have ever used. In fact, these 2312HMs are even better than the 2001fp units that I used for almost a decade, if only because they're cheaper and have a standard power connector. Aside from the displayport, I can't find a single flaw with these. If you haven't had the pleasure of using a Dell UltraSharp before, I highly recommend you find someone with one to just play with it for 5-10 minutes. Unless you're super sensitive to price or a few ms in response time, you will never go back. The stand adjustments, image quality, and ease of use are simply unmatched anywhere in this price range...

Great little mini-ITX case

Thermaltake Element Q VL52021N2U Black SGCC / Plastic Mini-ITX Desktop Computer Case 200W SFX Power Supply
Thermaltake Element Q VL52021N2U Black SGCC / Plastic Mini-ITX Desktop Computer Case 200W SFX Power Supply

Pros: - Small - Solid construction. - Easy assembly. - Just the right size PSU for the type of computer this should contain. - Customers love them because they look good and are quiet. - Thus far the PSUs have been completely solid.

Cons: - Pricier than identical cases with higher-wattage PSUs and nicer-looking front bezels (though these are more durable). - Heavy for what it is. - Cramped if you need more than a couple SSDs. Retrospectively, I wouldn't use it again for a similar small office server build that I did with an i5 and mirrored 3.5" storage drives.

Overall Review: I built a bunch of computers with i3-2120T processors and SSDs about a year and a half ago and they're still running strong with no complaints from the users. For those, this case was an excellent choice. However, with much more than such low-mid range hardware, they get hotter than I like to see due to very low airflow. This is why I wouldn't do something along the lines of the i5-2450S with 3.5" drives (their file server) in one again. That machine idles around 15-20F above ambient, which would concern me on a machine that did much heavier duty than this one does (it runs a couple VMs, file serving, and services for applications they need). Still, this is the only one that has been even marginally flaky out of all their machines, and I suspect that's either due to heat or spinning those two big 3.5" drives with this little PSU. I wouldn't even contemplate building a machine with a video card in this case, it's simply not going to dissipate that kind of heat. Regardless, it's a solid case for a mini-ITX build and perfect for use on a desk in an office. I'd strongly consider other mini-ITX cases before buying it again, simply due to the price.
