Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5
  • Verified Owner
  • neweggOwned For: more than 1 year

Pros: Worked fine for several years.

Cons: Bought in fall 2012 died jan 2016. A little over 3 years of life. I have many drives who lived much longer lives. Not run 24/7 just 3 or 4 hrs a day. This drive was a hot backup to the OS drive.

Other Thoughts: Developed "hard to read sectors". Seatools for DOS "fixed" it but I use it as a place to put backups so can't have a flaky backup drive can we.

LINKSYS BEFSR41 EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch 1 x 10/100Mbps WAN Ports 4 x 10/100Mbps LAN Ports

Pros: Works as router with fixed IP.
No wireless.
Very Basic

Cons: The big con: I find this router has broken implementation of DHCP. This will cause problems for most users. See Other
No updates for many years.
Price is now 2x what I paid in 12/2008
Web interface doesn't have obvious log off. (seems to required closing page)
Would have given no stars but Newegg requires at least one.

Other Thoughts: Bought 12/08 but it sat unused until 1/20/16. Had it as a backup to my old trusty RT314. Switched to higher speed ISP so needed to switch to BEFSR41 which has faster WAN port.

As I used the BEFSR41 and mobile and IOT devices were added and removed, devices on the network seemed to loose connectivity - Especially windows 7 PCs. You can search the internet and see that many others have this problem.

Finally one message board post I found cleared it up. The implementation of DHCP is broken. It causes the unit to loose track of who has a lease and which have expired. Some devices continue to remember their last leased address but the router will reassign this address to a new device. Et voila, you have an IP address conflict. This will cause Win 7 computers to issue the dreaded unknown network error and no internet connectivity warnings.

The default lease time is 1 day so this process of destruction appears very slow. If you make lease time very short (minutes) and add and remove devices you can make it happen quickly. You could try making the lease very long but then eventually you run out of IP addresses in your DHCP pool. Maybe you could make the pool very large and get down to reseting the router only once a year or month depending on how often you put new devices on the network.

The router routes fixed IPs correctly. It connects to the cable modem correctly and doesn't seem to lose WAN connection.

But defective DHCP is not acceptable in 21st century of mobile devices and IOT.

There are no new updates for fixing this and no security updates. Also not acceptable in 21st century.

Lastly, this device is expensive WRT what it is,

I would recommend buying a modern router instead. Even if you don't need wireless, just turn off the Wifi and use the wired features. I replaced this router with a newer TPlink product and it works fine. I have a previously installed AP that is located to make coverage of the house appropriate, so I don't use the TPlink WIFI.

2 out of 5 eggs OK until it died age 1 year 01/17/2016

This review is from: Seagate ST1000LM014 1TB SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Laptop SSHD Bare Drive

Pros: Faster than completely mechanical drive. Bigger than SSD at an equivalent price.

Cons: Died very dead, after 1 year. Not just SMART warnings or a few sectors, but stone cold dead. Put it in a desktop machine as a secondary drive and it prevented the boot drive from working. Couldn't even look for data to recover. Its one of the few drives I've ever had that died completely.

Other Thoughts: I didn't buy this drive from newegg. It came in an ACER E15 laptop I bought from newegg. Laptop has 1 year parts and labor warranty. Guess what, this thing died 1year + 2 weeks. Don't think I will get any love from Seagate on that. Definitely won't get any from ACER.

Decided I still want 1 TB drive so I will take a fling on a WD hybrid drive. Total SSD at 1 TB is worth about 1/2 what I paid for the Laptop. Doesn't make sense to sink that much into a year old laptop.

If the WD dies prematurely, I will have learned my lesson on Hybrid Drives. I'm hoping I will not regret going back to hybrid.
