Great Receiver

YAMAHA RX-A1020 7.2-Channel Receiver
YAMAHA RX-A1020 7.2-Channel Receiver

Pros: Many HDMI inputs. Also supports older connections (digital optical, digital coax, component, RCA). All the older connections are re-configurable to which A/V output the correspond with. Sound is very crisp, and not exaggerated. HDMI Standby is a great feature - you can still select the input with the receiver "off" and it will go straight to the TV - sound comes out of the TV as well. Then if you turn on the receiver, it takes over the sound which no longer gets sent to the TV. Upgradable firmware is a great feature (seems to be more and more common with devices these days), allows manufacturer to create software fixes for issues. Yamaha adds features on occasion (now supports SiriusXM radio over internet - though I haven't tried this). The YPAO seems to be accurate. It was able to determine the distance of each speaker from the viewing location.

Cons: I haven't had any issues yet. I did a lot of comparing, and read the instruction manual before purchasing - so I knew exactly what I was getting.

Overall Review: I have it set up as 5.1 for now (since I'm upgrading my old home theatre system). I'm considering going up to 7.1, but not sure how much difference it makes.

Most Critical Review

Dead after 3 months

IOGEAR GFR204SD 10-in-1 USB 2.0 SD/ MicroSD/ MMC Card Reader/ Writer (Green/ Gray)
IOGEAR GFR204SD 10-in-1 USB 2.0 SD/ MicroSD/ MMC Card Reader/ Writer (Green/ Gray)

Pros: Had a small footprint and worked well at first. Looks neat.

Cons: After two months of use, I found that my PC would not get past POST. After a thorough process of elimination, I found that removing this card reader would fix the issue. Other adapters and external drives worked fine. Putting this adapter back broke POST again. There were no hardware changes or BIOS updates that I can think would have led this to happen. For the first two months I could boot the PC with no issue while this reader was connected. A month after this and the reader can't read or write SD cards anymore. During extended reads/writes (more than 10 seconds), Linux will report that the USB device was disconnected and then the reader will be assigned a new device node. At first I thought it was a bad SD Card, so I grabbed another and found the same results. Then I used a different brand reader, and it resulted in much faster transfers and no disconnects. Something's definitely wrong with this reader, I'm not sure if it's a design issue or if I got a bad reader.

Well built

StarTech.com FAN4SPLIT12 1 ft. 4 Pin Fan Power Splitter Cable - F/M Female to Male
StarTech.com FAN4SPLIT12 1 ft. 4 Pin Fan Power Splitter Cable - F/M Female to Male

Pros: The adapter is well built. I used it for parts for another project.

Cons: The price seems a little high for a simple splitter - but still is obviously not high enough to break a budget.

Interference

Rosewill RCW-108 - 6-Foot USB 2.0 A Male to Mini B (5-Pin) Male, Black
Rosewill RCW-108 - 6-Foot USB 2.0 A Male to Mini B (5-Pin) Male, Black

Pros: As a basic cable or for charging it seems to work nicely.

Cons: I originally purchased this as part of a project. This connected to a temperature probe. The computer controlled devices via electromagnetic relays based on the readings - most of the devices have a inductive load. When using this cable, it would drop the data connection almost every time a relay was actuated. (You could see the OS claim the USB device was disconnected, then it would quickly reconnect). I could also replicate the issue by simply (un)plugging power to the nearby motors. Long story short, I was using the wrong cable for the job. I replaced it with a USB cable that had Ferrite beads on it - no more interference issues.

Overall Review: I still rate the cable highly. For a basic, cheap cable - it gets the job done. For my more sensitive application, I shouldn't have settled. This is more my fault than the cable's.

Good

GELID Solutions Slient 7 FN-SX07-22 70mm Case Fan
GELID Solutions Slient 7 FN-SX07-22 70mm Case Fan

Pros: Pretty silent. Good airflow. Looks cool.

Cons: I ordered two. I always use my finger to give fans a free spin to test them before plugging in. The first one kept getting caught. I thought I had fixed it, but when I plugged it in, it rattled pretty badly. I found that the wires had a bit of a bend where they were coming out of the hub, and they were interfering with something in there. I used a tool to pull the wire taut and it was fine afterward.

Overall Review: The second fan had no issues at all. I'm not sure if this is indicative of quality control - I only have the two fans, small sample. I was pleased that it was an easy fix.

2x MSI N780 TF in SLI

MSI Gaming N780 TF 3GD5/OC G-SYNC Support GeForce GTX 780 3GB 384-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 SLI Support Video Card
MSI Gaming N780 TF 3GD5/OC G-SYNC Support GeForce GTX 780 3GB 384-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 SLI Support Video Card

Pros: * nVidia * Does not get loud * Can be overclocked easily * Has 4 outputs (2x DVI, 1x HDMI, 1x DP) * Supports nVidia HD Audio Driver [installed by default with Geforce drivers] - Allows surround sound over HDMI * Renders Dawn in enough polygons to make Theodore from "Her" consider cheating

Cons: * The included "GamingApp" is a bunch of hogwash. It has a confusing error if you have SLI enabled which makes it seem like you have to load the app, disable SLI, then re-enable SLI to get it to work right. *^ Just stick with using Afterburner for O/C, then the above isn't an issue * Cheating is bad. Don't do it Theo!

Overall Review: * I could have taken the blue pill, and woke up with just one 780. I chose to take the red pill, and saw just how deep the rabbit hole goes. * I have it set up for a desktop computer to a 22" ASUS HD monitor; I also run an HDMI cable (w/ Redmere) through my ceiling to my Home Theater (51" 3D Plasma, 5.1 surround). Video card runs both at full 1080P, while also being my "sound card" and giving games full high quality 5.1 surround sound. I'm not sure whether the sound processing is GPU or CPU driven - but either way it doesn't have a noticeable performance impact. * nVidia has a 3DTV Play software which will allow you to game in 3D using a 3D TV - but it costs extra and I don't really enjoy gaming with 3D Glasses.
