Perfect case for SOHO NAS

LIAN LI PC-Q25B Black Aluminum Mini-ITX Tower Computer Case
LIAN LI PC-Q25B Black Aluminum Mini-ITX Tower Computer Case

Pros: I got this to replace an aging Drobo, and move to something with some better reliability. I decided to build my own NAS out of cost and performance considerations. (Went with unRAID as my OS. Not the most advanced, but it does a good job and is easily recoverable in the event of data loss.) The case itself is PERFECT for a NAS. No 5.25" bay, 5 hot swap 3.5 bays, and more mounting area on the floor of the case. I currently have 5*2tb drives in the main bays, and a 256gb drive on the bottom for cache. I'm booting off a USB stick, so that I can keep the case dedicated to storage. I was a little apprehensive of the aluminium construction, as I've only ever really used steel, but Lian Li has made an astonishingly strudy case. I'm very impressed with the build quality. It is a small case, and with the PSU in, it's impossible to get to the motherboard. However, as cramped as it is, the airflow makes perfect sense. There's an intake on the front, exhaust on the top, another intake vent on the bottom, and the PSU will also act as an exhaust for the CPU.

Cons: Noise. Stick this thing in a closet or replace the fans. I have it sitting in my wiring closet, but I can hear it when I'm in there. If you're going to sit it somewhere that's out in the open, change the fans to some Fractals or something quiet. Fingerprints. It is a total fingerprint magnet. While it's not a real issue, it's just a minor annoyance.

Overall Review: SATA connectors are now situated horizontally unlike previous versions that required "left-angle" SATA connectors to prevent an unhealthy bend radius. I will absolutely recommend you get 5 angled SATA connectors, and go ahead and wire up all bays regardless of if you are using them initially or not.

RAID - Time - Headache = Drobo

Drobo BeyondRAID 4 Bay Diskless Storage Array Enclosure - DR04DD10
Drobo BeyondRAID 4 Bay Diskless Storage Array Enclosure - DR04DD10

Pros: Completely consolidated my data into one storage pool, I can sleep at night knowing my data is safe, Well constructed and designed unit, Great speeds for being an attached raid device.

Cons: I can see that glossy cover being a fingerprint magnet.

Overall Review: I've had data thrown across multiple drives and computers for years now, I finally broke down and coughed up the cash for a Drobo. It has most definitely paid off. I keep it attached to a mac mini, and the mini acts as a server. All of my data, consolidated into one place, 0 headaches, awesome.

Always awesome

Western Digital WD Green WD10EADS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital WD Green WD10EADS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Fast, Affordable, Western Digital.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: I've used Western Digitals ever since I started building machines, and I've never had a problem with them. No exceptions here. I purchased 2 of these to put into my Drobo along with 2 older model WD Caviar Green 1tbs that were already sitting in there. They work extremely well, and it's the same quality that I've grown to love out of WD.
