Question 1

Does this unit have the ability to be mounted on the wall or another surface? I can't find any pictures of the underside.

I have 2 of these and they both have slots on the bottom that appear to be for a mounting bracket.  There is a wide slot approximately 1/4" that narrows down to a thin slot probably 1/8" or less.  Looks like it is designed for a thin plastic bracket that it slides onto.  However, neither one of mine came with a bracket, and I find no mention of one in the user manual.  I think with some creativity, you could fabricate something that would work.

Question 2

I'm not too tech savvy. Will this unit extend range and speed from a Trendnet AC 1750 router to 2 laptops, a Kindle, an Ipad, 2 smart TV's and 2 smart phones  simultaneously?

It should extend the range and will work with multiple devices, but it won't increase your speed because it will be talking to your Trendnet router, and that is limiting your bandwidth.  However, with a stronger signal, you would probably see better speeds for devices that were previously having trouble getting a good signal.

That said, my experience with this wasn't great.  I used it for a while to "extend" my network, which really means just creating a new network name (SSID) and password for this device.  I ran some speed tests, and when I connected via a wired connection, I was getting the max speeds my home gets, but through the wireless, it was about half the speed I would normally get.  Also, this extender would occasionally interfere with the signal from my main router and my Roku would lose its connection.  Finally, I had a wireless phone connected to this to help extend my phone range as well, but it quite working properly after a few months, even though I changed no settings in the Extender or upgraded the firmware.

How many wireless devices are able to connect to it?

I did not realize there is a limit.  However, we have usually connected 4-6 devices wirelessly without any issues.  Of course the quality of the output will be directly impacted.

Does the D-LINK work independently from my home network?

Depends what you mean by independent. If your homes network goes down, then this extender will go down as well. In that respect, it is completely dependent.

You are able to set it up to have its own network names (SSIDs) and passwords. Although it does rely on your routers internet connection to work, it is its own separate network and in that way is somewhat independent.

Question 7

Can I use the same SSID as the main router's SSID?  For instance, if my main SSID is 'abc', can name this extender's SSID 'abc'?  I want my whole house using only one SSID if possible.  My current setup requires me to switch SSID back and forth depending on where I am at.

I think it looks like it will work the way you want it to. This is quoted from the manual:

"In Repeater mode, the DAP-1650 extends the range of your existing wireless network by repeating the wireless signal of another access point or wireless router. The DAP-1650 and wireless router (if used) must be within range of each other. The extended wireless network can use the same SSID and security settings as the existing network, or you can choose to specify a new network name and security method."

hi, im currently using optimum wifi from a local hotspot. i have perfect signal on five wireless devices in my home. i would like to use my wireless router to supply more devices. could i connect this dlink to my wireless routers modem input?

Probably yes. I have attached it through LAN cable to my router as access point for part of my house that was not getting coverage and it works fine. Gives you additional 3 LAN hook ups too. You have to make sure to put in Access point mode. If you put it in range extender mode, then will only repeat your signal.

must this device be plugged into a Ethernet port?

No, this devices main purpose is a "Range Extender". Meaning it connects to your homes/offices current wifi and extends it (wirelessly). This is all setup by a computer currently on the wireless network by typing in the DAP 1650s default IP address. The manual walks you though all of this.

There is an option to use this as an "Access Point" as well. This differs from a Range Extender in that with an access point, you plug an Ethernet cable from your router to the DAP 1650. With this setup, it extends the wifi signal just the same as above. The main difference is it is hard lined into the router.

Question 10

I have a D-Link DIR-645 router on one side of the house, but the wifi signal is too weak to reach the opposite side.

I'd like to connect this DAP-1650 using CAT5e ethernet cable to the router, then use it as a switch via ethernet cables to the computers in the same room, as well as send out wifi to the mobile devices near by (same wifi network name, encyption & password as the router).

The goal is to run gigabit speed for all the hardwired devices in the house and have wifi roaming for mobile devices. Is this possible?

This device acts as a wireless repeater/amplifier. You program it with your network info and place it midway between signal areas and dramatically increase range. You can also hardwire with an ethernet cable but you should not have to. if you are going to use a hardwire you would be better off with a second regular wifi router and cascade them so as to make it a signal repeater
