I use a D-Link DIR-655 router which is upstairs. Currently I have one cable running from router to one PC downstairs (others upstairs). I want to add a second PC downstairs, but do not want to add a second cable. I would like a second device downstairs to plug the current cable into it and then from that device place ethernet cables to each PC. A switch looks right, but I do not see a port on this DES-105 to plug-in the ethernet cable from the router. Am I not understanding the switch? I have read that I could add a second router to do what I want, but the switch looks easier if it would work?

A switch directs traffic on the same subnet (private LAN), so every port is on the same network. That is why it does not have a router port - routers go from one network to another. Switches have an advantage over hubs since switches specifically direct traffic to the attached network devices - hubs do not direct traffic and instead only multiply the packets and increase overhead.

So what it sounds like you want to do is run a LAN cable from upstairs to port 1 (it could be another port number) of the switch and then plug your other computers in ports 2 and 3 (again it could be other port numbers).
