Yes, I use it on Windows 7, 64 Bit, Pro.  If you use it as a second adapter, you'll have to re-enter any pre-shared keys as Windows keeps the keys per adapter.

Can I be "hard-wired" into my network, and use this to connect to my wireless printer?

The D-Link DWA-171 is a USB wi-fi network adaptor for connecting a desktop PC or laptop with no built-in (or defective) wi-fi adaptor to a wifi (wireless) network.

To connect your wireless printer to a wired network you will need to add a wireless router (which also has wired ethernet ports on the backside).  Another way of converting a wired internet network to wireless internet is using a wireless Access Point device.  The wireless Access Point device is not as easy to set-up a wireless network as devoted wireless router.  Since there are many low price wireless routers available, I would definitely recommend adding a wireless router to your wired network.

Would this be a good replacement for my Netgear WNA 3100 wireless adapter? The adapter says it's using "IEEE® 802.11 b/g/n2.4 GHz" so I'm assuming I'll be fine...?

Hello Shelby B,

Yes, this adapter should work just fine for you.  The only potential issue you may have is if you installed the software for the Netgear WNA3100.  I really don't think it'll cause any problems, but you should uninstall that software first before installing the D-Link software.

Something to note: The data rate on your WNA3100 is advertised as *up to 300 Mbps*, whereas the D-Link DWA-171 is *up to 150 Mbps*.  You would only ever notice this difference when transfering large files / large amounts of files between computers over your home network (standard broadband internet speeds are ~25 Mbps, FYI).

Getting down to brass tacks, all this means is that *only when transferring files between two computers in your home network*, the speed will be up to 18.75 MBps (150 Mbps) on the D-Link instead of 37.5 MBps (300 Mbps) on the Netgear; there shouldn't be any noticable change when using the internet.

Stay away from this adapter since will not last over one two years  mind just quite like that , I did nothing ??????. Get a net gear they are so much better

Similar answer to the other Donald… this is a "wireless network card" in a USB stick.  You can unplug it whenever you don't need wireless network access, and plug it in whenever you do.  Any modern operating system should be able to keep your settings between such connections.

Mine broke after about a year and a half, but that's mostly because my MacBook (Air) slipped sideways and landed *on* the adapter.  If you're planning to be careless like that, you might want to install a short-cabled cable or hub, and Velcro it to the back of the laptop… :)
