amazing card

HT OMEGA Claro Halo 24-bit 192KHz PCI Interface Sound Card w/ a built-in HI-FI Headphone Amplifier
HT OMEGA Claro Halo 24-bit 192KHz PCI Interface Sound Card w/ a built-in HI-FI Headphone Amplifier

Pros: Great sound quality, easy installation using XP and Linux. The card was recognized right away by Linux Mint, and the driver under Linux sounds terrific. Very solid build quality. Amazing imaging. Rivals the sound quality of a famous brand firewire based breakout box on my Mac that costs more than twice as much.

Cons: I have found none. I'm using the card with a pair of high quality near field monitors and it sounds like nothing - which is exactly how a great piece of audio equipment should sound. No coloration, extended frequency response, transparent.

Overall Review: I would also like to mention the excellent support I received from HT Omega. I did NOT have an issue with the card, just a question, and they responded very quickly and were a pleasure to deal with. Great card, great company.

follow-up/luck of the draw

Patriot Xporter XT Rage 16GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive PEF16GRUSB
Patriot Xporter XT Rage 16GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive PEF16GRUSB

Pros: This is a follow-up to my review of 08/13. I took Patriot up on their offer to contact them about this drive. BTW, their own forums have 5 pages of complaints about the write speed of this drive - interesting reading. In the forum the head of technical support (Ben) admits that the drive package should not read 25MB, but "up to 25 MB". Advertising 25MB, I believe, means everyone should get that as a minimum, some may get more depending on the system. You will notice that the drive description now in fact reads "up to 25" on New Egg. Hats off to Patriot though for their response. I quickly received an RMA drive which now gets 22MB+ in Windows for write speeds, although my MacPro still gets writes in the teens (but with reads up to 33MB.)

Cons: It is important to understand that not only will every drive work differently with every system, but every drive itself will vary in performance. Companies perform what is called "binning", where they check whether or not a memory module meets certain standards and can thus be sold as advertised or must be used in lower rated products. It seems to me that Patriot had a very liberal binning process for this drive, but Patriot was kind enough to offer me a speed-binned drive, one that they knew would perform at a higher level than the one I had. Understanding this, one would perhaps not be so judgmental of others if their drives do not perform as well as yours. It may not be because of one's wonderful high-end system, simply that you got one of the inherently better performing drives. Consider yourself lucky, not superior.

Overall Review: Still only 2 stars as even though this drive performs better, I would not have bought it if not for the initial advertising claims. Again tho, kudos to Patriot for their follow-up, and thanks to Ben and Keevin in the RMA department.

superb

SAMSUNG EcoGreen F4 ST2000DL004 2TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
SAMSUNG EcoGreen F4 ST2000DL004 2TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I cannot believe that a 5400 drive is this fast. I have been using WD 1TB Black drives (which are excellent also) and was surprised when these drives not only out-benchmarked them in throughput but also in the real world - copied a 900G Itunes library in 1 hour less using these drives than it took with the WD Blacks. Programs launch just as fast and what benchmarks as a slower access time is not noticeable at all. Price! $80 on sale for 2 TB!

Cons: We'll see if they hold up as well as the WD Black series, which has been very reliable. So far, no problems

Overall Review: Shipping. How nice to get properly packed hard drives from New Egg for once. The drives were in individual hard plastic cases surrounded with bubble wrap, then each was inside a small cardboard box, both boxes inside a larger cardboard box with paper padding. Just got done ordering a 3rd drive.

disappointed

Patriot Xporter XT Rage 16GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive PEF16GRUSB
Patriot Xporter XT Rage 16GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive PEF16GRUSB

Pros: fast, small, no cap to lose

Cons: I am not getting the large increase in write speed promised with this drive. Benchmarking under Mac OS X, Windows 7 and real world use under Ubuntu 10.04 show very nice read speeds (upper 20's) but write speeds maxing out around 17. No activity light (as in the Boost drives). No lanyard (how cheap can you get, especially with a drive this small).

Overall Review: I own 2 Patriot Xporter XT Boost drives (4 & 8G) and this drive shows only a minimal increase in performance. The Boost drives have proven to be reliable and sturdy, my favorite flash drives of many I have owned. This drive does not deliver what it promises (although it does perform well) and cuts corners as far as convenience.

nice burner

Pros: Does disk quality testing, and does it well. Anything you want a burner to do it does well. Fast.

Cons: Not the quietest, but not obnoxious. DVD burns are very good but not as good as Pioneer 217. Both cons are minor - I am really happy with this burner.

great overall burner

Pioneer CD/DVD Burner 20X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 20X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 40X CD-R 32X CD-RW Black SATA Model DVR-217DBK

Pros: Does everything you want from a burner at least very well - rip, play and burn. DVD burns are especially good. Quiet - whether listening to cd's or playing dvd's much quieter than any other burner I use; relatively quiet when burning also.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: The usual high quality product I expect in a Pioneer burner.
