Intel NUC Skull Canyon Is a Great Machine

Intel NUC Skull Canyon NUC6i7KYK Kit with 6th Gen. Intel Core i7 Processor, M.2 SSD Compatible, Dual DDR4 Memory Max 32GB with Intel Iris Pro Graphics, Thunderbolt 3, No OS, Windows 10 Compatible
Intel NUC Skull Canyon NUC6i7KYK Kit with 6th Gen. Intel Core i7 Processor, M.2 SSD Compatible, Dual DDR4 Memory Max 32GB with Intel Iris Pro Graphics, Thunderbolt 3, No OS, Windows 10 Compatible

Pros: Easy to put together. Wireless keyboard and blue tooth worked out of the box. Windows 10 install was fast (about 5 minutes). I was worried about noise issues but so far very pleased - I have the NUC stored in a book cases and can't hear it at my desk. More heavy load testing required to confirm but very optimistic.

Cons: I was a bit surprise that I need to download ethernet drivers from Intel to get the Windows 10 to connect to my LAN. If you didn't have a working machine on the net getting this NUC on the net might be challenging. But downloaded the drivers from Intel, install and everything works fine. Lots of driver updates to install. Getting F2 to work during boot cycle from my wireless keyboard appears to be impossible. Still investigating (minor issue in big picture). Still need to figure out how best to update NUC BIOS -- yes there is an update for that as well.

Overall Review: A great desktop replacement (I am junking 10 year old XP machines).

Most Critical Review

Unstable after 3 weeks of usage

UpStar M280A1 High Glossy Black + Hairline 28" 4K UHD HDMI Display Port Widescreen Backlight LCD Monitor
UpStar M280A1 High Glossy Black + Hairline 28" 4K UHD HDMI Display Port Widescreen Backlight LCD Monitor

Pros: The monitor worked fine out of the box.

Cons: But after less than 1 month of usage it no longer functions and behaves erratically. On Friday it worked as expected. On Sunday, it powered up but failed to show any signal from my NUC (no menu dialog options at boot and no system signals), then showed a dialog reading "P in P H zzzzz" after 10 sends and the power light went to orange (sleep mode). I restarted the monitor and tried to enter the menu mode (first time I've done this) and the mode shows up in French for about 10 sends and then the "P in P H zzzz" dialog and nothing. After several reboots and tries I did get a menu mode in English but was unable to avoid the "P in P H zzzz" dialog. This evening, the dialog changed to "P in P V zzzz" and the menu was displayed as if the monitor was in the a vertical mode. Nothing I could do on the NUC had any effect on the monitor. Its most recent behavior is to NOT show a menu and staying Green (no dialog). And I see on the warranty that I have to pay for the shipping costs to return this sucker for warranty work. I am extremely disappointed in this upstar monitor and the fact tha NewEgg carries such a low quality production. I will be replacing this with a locally purchased 4K monitor. If upstar fix it then fine, I'll have too monitors. I will never trust upstar for any component on which I rely for daily business. My efforts to save a few bucks on a monitor turned out to be a huge waste.

Love this monitor but funny startup behavior with Skull Canyon NUC

ASUS MG28UQ Black 28" 1ms (GTG) 3840 x 2160 4K UHD Adaptive-Sync (FreeSync) Gaming Monitor, w/ Asus Exclusive GamePlus and Flicker Free Technology, Pivot & Height Adjustment, Built-in Speakers

Pros: Little setup required and if setup is required the controls are easy to access/use (love the toggle switch that moves cursor up and down or left and right - brilliant little feature IMO) and good physical height/tilt adjustments (without feeling like something is going to break). Color is great and text very nice. A pleasure to work with this monitor. I love it!!

Cons: When I power up my system (turn on power bar, turn on NUC, turn on monitor) the monitor usually goes into a flashing cycle- on for a 3 to 7 seconds then dark for 3 to 7 seconds, repeating forever. If I power down the monitor during the flashing cycle; and then power it up the flashing behavior is gone. Once the system has been stable for a minute or more the flashing behavior has never reappeared. If I only power up the monitor after the NUC has finished booting then the flashing behavior usually doesn't happen. And if it does happen then the power down power up work around resolves the problem. It looks like there is a subtle synchronization problem between this monitor and the NUC6i7KYK. No idea who is at fault but clearly there is a repeatable start-up problem. I haven't played around with cable but will swap out cables in future to see if may be a permanent fix.

Overall Review: Even with this quirk between this monitor and my NUC6i7KYK, I still recommend this monitor. Perhaps a future drive update will resolve this startup synchronization behavior or perhaps a replacement cable. In any event, given that the work around is effective and simple, I recommend this monitor without reservation .
