Most Favorable Review

One of the best budget cases out there.

Cooler Master HAF 912 - Mid Tower Computer Case with High Airflow, Supporting up to Six 120mm Fans and USB 3.0
Cooler Master HAF 912 - Mid Tower Computer Case with High Airflow, Supporting up to Six 120mm Fans and USB 3.0

Pros: Front and top panels can take 200mm fans, or dual 120mm fans in the same places. Dust filter for front fan(s) and bay covers. Simple and secure toolless mounts for hard drives, and the case can hold lots of them. Separate cage for 2.5" drives. 2.5" and upper 3.5" drive cages are removable. Bottom mounted PSU. Side panel can take up to a 140mm fan. Lots of space behind the tray for routing cables. Multiple holes in the tray for routing the cables and lots of tie-off points to hold them in place. Front ports stay attached to the case when the front panel is removed, which was a pleasant surprise. No worries about a panel dangling from thin wires. There is one oddly placed slot cover that doesn't line up with the motherboard. This is perfect for holding a rear port bracket (USB, etc.) so it doesn't block a usable slot. All eight slots have actual covers instead of snap-off panels.

Cons: Interior of the case is not painted black like the outside. This does not interfere with function, however. Bottom drive cage cannot be removed without drilling out rivets. Only one side panel and the off-placed slot have thumbscrews. You will need a screwdriver for everything else. Motherboard standoffs use metric screws (same M3 screw used to hold 5.25" drives) instead of SAE. This is not much of a problem if you're aware of it at the beginning. Only the top 5.25" bay has a toolless mount. I ended up removing that and using screws because the mount did not dampen vibration enough.

Overall Review: I only had minor issues with this case. It's very roomy inside, which makes installing a system easy. Just be aware that this case is wider than most, a result of being able to mount 200mm fans. Given the large feature set and low cost of this case, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a budget case.

Most Critical Review

A fairly good value, but exercise caution.

APEX SK-393-C Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
APEX SK-393-C Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: The case is lightweight and thus easy to move around. It also looks nice and has plenty of space for drives. Hole spacing on the side panel matches up with 80mm fans, so you can mount one or two on it. There is no Firewire port on the front panel. For some people this would be a drawback, but since I never use Firewire I prefer the omission. The four front USB ports are much more to my liking, while the headphone and mic ports don't really matter to me.

Cons: The light weight translates into flimsy construction. The side panels are very easy to bend. You can only use 80 or 92mm case fans, and only two unless you put some on the side panel. Only the top expansion slot has a cover. The rest are breakaway panels. There are no thumbscrews and only six motherboard standoffs included with the case. The manual is just one sheet of paper and references parts that are not present on this case.

Overall Review: I bought the case because it was cheap and had decent reviews. It's going to be a hand-me-down to someone who's just going to use it for music and internet, so its shortcomings won't really be an issue. I don't recommend it for anyone who's going to be swapping out hardware on a regular basis, however.

A few minor gripes, but nothing too serious

Diablotek CPA-0390 Black SGCC Steel Legend ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Diablotek CPA-0390 Black SGCC Steel Legend ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: The case can take 120mm fans in all positions. The front and bottom fans have dust filters. All drives have toolless attachments. I'm a fan of cases with bottom-mounted power supplies. The parts bag includes an adapter for fastening the motherboard standoffs with a screwdriver, which was a nice touch. This kind of feature set is not often seen in budget cases like this.

Cons: The PCI slot covers are breakaway slats, and the top one is already removed. If your motherboard skips the top slot (like one I used to have) you will need to either leave it open or buy a cover. There is no AC'97 plug for the front panel audio, only HD. This is likely not an issue with new equipment but since I'm putting an old Socket A rig in here it was an issue for me. Most cases have both plugs hanging off one cable so the omission puzzles me. Removing the front dust filter for cleaning requires a screwdriver. Removing the bottom one could be easier. Some slide out while this one requires a small amount of bending to get it out of its clips. There is no dust filter for the side panel, but on the other hand this is not unusual for cases in general.

Overall Review: I bought this case to hold an older system and it should do nicely for that. I only had minor issues with this case which can be dealt with without too much difficulty. I saved the front panel cables from an old case and was able to bodge together a combined AC'97 and HD cable, but this should not have been necessary.

Failed almost immediately

CENTON MediaPower 32GB SD/SDHC Flash Card Model 32GBSDHC10
CENTON MediaPower 32GB SD/SDHC Flash Card Model 32GBSDHC10

Pros: Got it at a good price.

Cons: I bought this to use in my T2i. Worked fine for about a week. Went out to check on a long exposure and was greeted by an error message on the camera's LCD stating that the camera couldn't write to the card. Loaded the card into my laptop where I could see the directory contents but couldn't copy anything.

Overall Review: Time to find out if Knoppix Rescue can recover the files. I didn't keep the packaging so I don't know if I can RMA this or not.

Great fan, while it lasts

Scythe SY1225SL12SH "Slipstream" Case Fan
Scythe SY1225SL12SH "Slipstream" Case Fan

Pros: Moves a lot of air for its size without being excessively loud. Sleeved cord and black plug look slick.

Cons: Short lifespan, at least for me. I'm using a heatsink on my CPU that takes a 120mm fan, and this fan seemed ideal for the task. However, on two occasions in less than a year I've found the fan motor gummed up to the point that the fan would not turn. Luckily my computer shuts itself off if it doesn't get an RPM signal from the CPU fan.

Overall Review: This might work better as a case fan instead of on a heatsink, and my experience may not be typical.
