Great little sub... WOW
Pros: Price, Size, Frequency response, Power, Quality
Cons: Phase switch that only allows 0 or 180 degrees. A knob with some options for in between would be nice.
Overall Review: First a little background on my situation... I had a little Sony HTIB that I used for years. It had a nice little 6.5" sub that was powered by the HTIB amp. Well it stopped working and there I was with some good surround speakers/sub but nothing to power them with. I was able to scrounge up an old Pioneer receiver that my dad wasn't using, but of course most receivers do not power the sub, so despite being happy with the sub I had I was forced to buy a new one... I was looking for something affordable, small so that the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) would be good, and down firing. (My old front firing sub caused some serious rattling in the entertainment center and the only thing that made it stop was to turn it so it was up firing). So I really wasn't looking for something amazing, just any old sub that would pick up where my little satellite speakers roll off. Enter the ML Dynamo 300! Right out of the box I was impressed with the build quality. The box feels sturdy and solid. I wasn't going to be able to set it up for a few days, but wanted to make sure it was working alright and not DOA. So I got some cables and plugged my phone into it. Ran a few songs with good bass lines that I was familiar with. All sounded clean, tight and musical. Then I switched over to the frequency generator app on my phone. I wasn't expecting it to go too deep because of it only being an 8" and rated down to 32 Hz but boy was I surprised! This thing is fairly powerful all the way down to about 25 Hz and rolls off quite badly at 23 Hz. Not bad for a little guy! And even at 23 Hz the sub was still working hard and moving plenty of air, just wasn't that audible. I probably should have moved a few feet away from it to be able to hear, but I didn't think of it at the time... A few days later after getting it all hooked up the wonderment just keeps on coming. All these years I thought that I had a decent sub and was doing fine. This thing makes my old 6.5" Sony look pathetic. It can get all the walls and ceiling rattling if I want it to. I had no idea what I'd been missing all this time. I started watching movies that I was familiar with and skipping to scenes I knew had good bass, and every scene left me amazed at what I had been missing. This thing gets so much lower and more powerful! Huge improvement over what I had! I can't really compare it to anything else but what I've owned, and I'm sure there are subs out there that will put this to shame also. But for the price that I paid for it, I can't imagine a better sub. I can see myself buying a second one when the basement gets finished and the home theater moves down there, but only because the area will be larger. I think it will be extremely hard to beat the value for money on this baby. If you're setting up your first home theater or upgrading from a HTIB like I did, I highly recommend this sub. If you're used to million watt 18" subs maybe this won't blow your skirt up, but it sure did mine.
