Real Air Mover!

Antec Lanboy air Yellow Black / Yellow Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Modular Case
Antec Lanboy air Yellow Black / Yellow Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Modular Case

Pros: First time I seen this case a few months back, I knew I would be doing a build using it. Been in the computer business for a number of years, retired from it about 7 years ago, but need a new "hot" video editing computer for a new 60p camera I purchased. Started looking at all the parts I needed, and first one on the list was Antec's Lanboy Air. Wanting to stay away from water cooling (for now anyway), I knew the next best way to do that is to move massive amounts of air to dissipate heat as fast as possible. So, along with this case I purchased the Noctua NH-U12P CPU cooler to keep this cooler air moving though a very large CPU heatsink. Between these 2 jems, I am able to overclock (minimally) my AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition from stock 3.2GHz all the way to 4.154GHz!!! This is a fully stable overclock -- Run Prime95 for hours @ core temps of 56C. Max. There is more headroom here, but without going to water cooling, I've about reached my limit. Excellent choice!!

Cons: I really can't think of any real cons. I am going to purchase 4 more 120mm fans, 2 for the top of the case and 2 for the m/b side. The 2 on top will pull air up and out (same direction the Noctua NH-U12P is moving CPU heated air out of the case now) and the 2 side fans will blow in, to help lower temps on the rear of the motherboard and CPU backplate.

Overall Review: I have build the best video editing computer I've ever used. A big part to this, is the Lanboy Air. Without it, I would have to used water cooling to reach these fully stable speeds. If you would want to know more about this build, take a look at some youtube video I've put up. Search speedwingnet on youtube. Don't no if any of these comments are unacceptable, but it is all good info, so hope it flies. Good luck on your next build.

Most Critical Review

Not for Windows 7 apparently...

Rosewill RC-217 SATA II 4 Port RAID 0/1/5/10 PCI RAID Card
Rosewill RC-217 SATA II 4 Port RAID 0/1/5/10 PCI RAID Card

Pros: So far, no pros.

Cons: Using the latest driver (which came with the card), I'm unable to initialize any of the 4 drives connected to this card using Disk Manager (Windows 7 app). All the drives are shown, but will not initialize. I tried a low-level format on one drive and went back to try and initialize it using Disk Manager, but still wouldn't initialize. I expect this to either be a bad card, or an incompatibility with my particular computer (HP m7640n Desktop). I'll call their support dept. next week and have already sent an email, but since I've done computer service work for about 20 years now, I'd not expect to see them come up with anything I've not already tried. BTW - Rosewill's RC-209 EX does work, but it is way slow (about 35 MB/s) which is about half of what the on-board SATA controller on this ASUS m/board does. So, even if I find a way to get this working, I don't expect I see any more then about 65~70 MB/s throughput anyway.

Good and bad.

SONY Vegas Pro Premium
SONY Vegas Pro Premium

Pros: I've have used Vegas since before it was a Sony product. For what it is, it does a good job. It has it's share of idiosyncrasies like any involved software, but for the most part, there are workarounds. I also own Premiere and maybe a half-dozen other editors and use each as needed for what I am trying to accomplish. Sony has it "place in the sun" for much of it.

Cons: Crashes. All editors crash, everyone. Vegas is not different, except a number of the crashes are or could be prevented with a bit tighter coding. Things like rendering, pre-rendering and even playback cause crashes. Not to hard to find out why, should be not to hard to fix them. But, Sony is an awfully large company and Vegas is an awfully small part of it. So, it sets on the back burning most of the time. When it was introduce, I don't know, maybe 15 years ago, it was a rocket ship compared to everything else out there. Now, it waddles along, chirping here, chirping there, and you make do. If Sony wanted it, it could be the #1 semi-pro editor. But, somehow I don't think that is in Sony's plans. Too bad to.

Overall Review: Pretty much said everything I want to.

IN REPLY TO MANUFACTURER'S RESPONSE

ASUS Radeon HD 7970 3GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card HD7970-DC2-3GD5
ASUS Radeon HD 7970 3GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card HD7970-DC2-3GD5

Pros: Manufacturer Response: Dear Valued Customer I am sorry that your display card did not meet your expectations. Please let me know if there is something I can do to help. I can be contacted by the below email address. Your reference number for this case is 3130133. Thank you. For support information, please visit http://support.asus.com. Cons: Just to replay to the manufacturer's response. I RMA'd that card, it was suppose to be fixed, but came back doing the same thing. Needing another card ASAP I opted to do an expedited used video card replacement. There was a $600 ping/hold put on my credit card maybe 2 weeks ago, but it's off and no card has been sent. It's hard to find the status on this online, but if I did find the right webpage, it seems it wll be late this month before it ships. I suppose that's the reason the hold on my credit card is off. BTW, I put this in the cons portion because not to many people would see this as a "Pro" statement... Would you?

Overall Review: First, why do I need to have a hold put on my credit card anyways? You had my video card once, you botched the repair, you should be begging me to let you send me another one. In fact, you should be sending me a new one. OK forget that. But why is there a $600 (extortionist amount BTW) hold anyway on a used card? And why is it still not shipped? It's suppose to kind be a fast thing I thought. My feeling is, if you hurt me, your hurt your whole customer base. Not a good thing to do in business. Your customer is suppose to be your most important asset. Yes, I am tired of Asus and companies in general who think customers are a problem and treat them that way. It's a good bet when I do (if I do) get this used card, it will be a bad one too. Don't worry, I'll post back here an let you know for sure.

"ATTO" says "Excellent"

PNY Elite Performance 64GB Secure Digital Extended Capacity (SDXC) Flash Card Model P-SDX64U1H-GE (EOL please see 20-178-822)
PNY Elite Performance 64GB Secure Digital Extended Capacity (SDXC) Flash Card Model P-SDX64U1H-GE (EOL please see 20-178-822)

Pros: I buy alot of flash card memory for various camera use. I need fast transfer, as some of my cameras shoot 4K video. Benchmarked this right at it's advertized speed using ATTO Bench32, which is always right on the money it seems. So, nothing bad, only good and at the price I paid, I would say Excellent too.

Cons: None yet. It takes awhile to see a problem with flash memory. Depends on what it is being used in and how hot the device runs.

Overall Review: Wish I had bought a few more.

On order -- Will post back after trying.

OLYMPUS Stylus SZ-14 Red 14 MP 24X Optical Zoom Digital Camera
OLYMPUS Stylus SZ-14 Red 14 MP 24X Optical Zoom Digital Camera

Pros: Price is where I was interested as I had the exact amount on store credit. I like to ride bicycle alot and have came across a few things on the road I wish I had a camera for. I figure to leave this in my handlebar bag and use it while biking. 5 Stars to start, but will post again if needs be.

Cons: I've heard the video is lacking somewhat and low light is grainy due to cheap sensor. Mono only which makes no sense as stereo wouldn't have cost any more.

Overall Review: For my needs, this may be enough of a camera. I do videography for the most part, but have been a shutterbug for 50 years as well. The digital age has open wide the doors to all who have even a bit of talent. Don't be afraid to have a go and have some fun while your at it.
