Solid choice for Linux HTPC - MythTV w/MythBuntu 8.10

ASUS M3N78-VM AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 8200 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
ASUS M3N78-VM AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 8200 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: It's an affordable choice for an HTPC project. Nvidia chipset is well supported in Linux. Has onboard HDMI (which worked under Linux without any special config). Playback of full 1080p content (from a samba share, no less) works great. BIOS has jumperless overclocking options, though I haven't had the need/desire to try it out. mATX form factor itself is a pro in my opinion.

Cons: Onboard sound under Ubuntu took a minute to figure out, but not a big deal. Just add 'rmmod snd_hda_intel; modprobe snd_hda_intel' to /etc/rc.local so that the module is reloaded at the END of the bootup sequence, and it works. Still trying to get audio over HDMI to work though :-/ Also, XvMC is not supported with geforce 8200 but that's nvidia's choice. VDPAU is a suitable alternative but MythTV needs to be compiled from source to take advantage. This just means it takes a bit more time and effort to get an HTPC up to snuff with this board than some would like.. That and the difficulty with audio-over-HDMI are the reasons I'm giving this board a 4 instead of a 5. It's still an excellent choice and I've been recommending it to my other friends who run MythTV.

Overall Review: I'm using this board as part of a home-brew HTPC project with MythTV. I'm running MythBuntu 8.10 (based on 32bit Ubuntu 8.10) and it's running great with only a few minor issues. My system: ASUS M3N78-VM AMD Athlon 64 X2 5050e 2.6Ghz 2x2GB GSkill case: Rosewill R379-SM Black/ Silver

Works perfectly

Linksys WRT54GL 802.11b/g Wireless Broadband Router up to 54 Mbps/ Compatible with Open Source DD-WRT (not pre-load)
Linksys WRT54GL 802.11b/g Wireless Broadband Router up to 54 Mbps/ Compatible with Open Source DD-WRT (not pre-load)

Pros: I love that this router runs Linux and has enough flash memory to allow you to install a variety of open firmwares that are available. I installed DD-WRT (generic) and it has been running flawlessly since. The QoS (Quality of Service) features work way better than my previous router. The flexibility and potential for customized routing configurations makes this router such a great choice for networking gurus and beginners alike. The stock firmware is pretty good but just missing a couple features that I wanted and DD-WRT provides those -- static DHCP entries, for example.

Cons: The only con I can think of is that it doesn't support gigabit Ethernet (GigE), but the price reflects that, so it's not a big deal. Linksys does offer a GigE wifi router but at the time of this writing it's about 3 times the price of this one.

Overall Review: Kudos to Linksys for offering this model of the WRT54G router. I was originally disappointed to see the decreased flash memory on the original model, but later delighted when I found this re-branding of the original's version 4 model.

Works Great

BELKIN TuneBase FM for iPod Model F8Z049-BLK
BELKIN TuneBase FM for iPod Model F8Z049-BLK

Pros: Easy to use and set up. Sturdy. Automatically turns on and resumes track when the car is started UNLIKE the Griffin RoadTrip which has to be manually turned on each time you start the car.

Cons: A little pricey.

Overall Review: I thought it was pretty cool that it uses the iPod display to show what radio station it's using.
